Re: instant porridge oats with milk in sachets ?
Last time I was out I went with a couple of different brands of instant porridge (Sainsbury's own brand and Alpen). The Alpen were vastly superior and worth the price premium. I bought them at the last minute so didn't have a suitable bag to pour them into - so just took the extra bulk of the pots -...

Re: HYALITE Peak Oyl MTN Sleeping Pad
I offloaded mine to flatfishy - couldn't justify selling something which I knew wasn't fit for purpose and I didn't want to get a replacement from the manufacturer because of its reputation. If they've any sense, they should probably stop selling them now and disassociate themselves with the product...

UKHammocks doing a quilt sale - 25% off their (already attractive) prices with code BIG14.
Summer fill top quilt now £108 including P&P. If I hadn't recently picked up a new summer sleeping bag I'd be most tempted

Re: Twitter
I spend a lot of time on Twitter (@EoghanLondon), but then a lot of my day job involves Twitter and other social media. My tweeting is a bit schizophrenic though - lots of pretty dry work-related stuff, then I'll suddenly shoot off on a complete tangent about the rugby or politics or some other rubb...

amazing how much stuff the kids love to take - spare shoes, spare everything, full cans of deodorant and other toiletries I was on Dartmoor last year on 10 Tors weekend. As well as 70l rucksacks with bits hanging off them, half the groups seemed to be carrying all sorts of rubbish like flags and ra...

Re: Waterproof jacket recommendations?
For some reason it seems to me that "walking" waterproofs are more expensive than "cycling" ones pound-for-pound. Cycling models don't come much more expensive than the Gore Fusion which is less than £200 I think (Gore-Tex Active Shell) whereas £200 doesn't buy you much of a walk...

This app is worth a look for semi-luddites like me who just want to use a paper map with the option of a simple grid reference now and again:

Outstanding knowledge from people there. Some of it familiar, loads of it not, so this is bookmarked. Not sure I have anything to add.

Not an expert on sleeping bags but this seems like a good deal to me for £125:- http://uk.racingtheplanet.com/store/gear/tents-sleeping/sleeping-bags/marmot-hydrogen-sleeping-bag-30f-1c.html So I've ordered one :D That's similar spec to the Alpkit PD400, which is considered a bargain at £150 if you...

Re: New to the forum, Looking for newbie advice?
I've got a mate who keeps giving me jibes that his tent (TN Laser Photon) is lighter than my bivvy + tarp setup. (Rab Alpine bivvy, TN Competition tarp). That said, the bivvy + tarp combo (with a nice new set of poles from Stu, yet to be tested) was a good bit cheaper. Hooped bivvy like a TN Jupiter...

Re: Kit for winter?
I've recently picked up a Montane Fireball. I suspect it'll be more versatile and more suited to British conditions than my down jacket. It's not quite as warm, but it's a bit lighter, so for anything other than subzero conditions I reckon it'll become my warm layer of choice.

Re: New Alpkit Bikepacking Gear
Good prices compared to the competition, which isn't a surprise, except for the harness which is expensive. Koala is straight away on my wishlist. The stem holsters look like winners too. The fuel pod is a good price but seems a bit small. Wasn't there word of a stripped-down, budget version of the ...

They've been coming up with some interesting minimalist ideas recently. The Wafer series is next-level lightness, but I actually thought this half-bag looks more interesting:

Re: why are some people arseholes in society
Official or not, information is very easy to come by with the t'interweb. Which can have both hugely positive and quite negative impacts on everyone. I know quite a few record collectors online who love to boast of their "secret" shops that nobody else knows about, where they can find the...

I have to say that I don't really understand why the MBA made the locations of bothies available to non members*. Surely the existence of bothies is just local knowledge though? Perhaps I'm naive, but I'd be surprised if people went to the trouble of going to the MBA website specifically to find pl...

Re: First bikepacking attempt: SDW
A mixed weekend which ultimately ended in failure – for several reasons but, sadly, the biggest one being my own lack of fitness. We were slightly later out of London than expected, meaning that we didn’t hit Winchester station until 10pm. A seriously terrible kebab later, we set out and peeled off ...

Not intending to take much water. 1.2l in bottles, we have puritabs and I've marked on the map grid references of potential water stops (from the handy http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/Southdowns/uploads/SDW_MBG_122009.pdf). I'll probably have a bit of water on my back as well; I'm not a MTB expert by...

Thanks, both.
I have countless drybags but only the one with the loops - my others are all standard Airloks. I might try putting some heavy bits in a 2l and strapping to the saddle, without the side loops I presume it'll rattle around like mad so probably won't got for anything bigger.

How are you planning to set your tarp up? Probably best expressed as odds. 5/2 fav lots of cursing and tears (accompanied by sniggers from my mate who has a natty TN Jupiter, which doesn't count as a real bivvy) finally resulting in sleeping bivvy-bag only with the tarp stuffed angrily into the ruc...
