HYALITE Peak Oyl MTN Sleeping Pad

Any one got anything to say about the HYALITE Peak Oyl MTN Sleeping Pad?

Additionally what are peoples thoughts on having your feet hanging off the end of the mat?

Hmm interesting. So while I have been researching this product I stumbled across that it used to be branded as Pacific Outdoor Equipment. My current sleeping mat (non self inflating) that I've had enough of repairing is an old POE one. I remember seeing my current one being sold as Hyalite and I assumed that POE had gone bust and they had bought up some of their designs. I mentioned something about this in my review I wrote before I started having problems with it. http://www.composite-projects.co.uk/201 ... -mattress/

It seems from this thread here however http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin ... startat=20 that POE and Hyalite were 2 separate but related companies (maybe Hyalite were distributing) that er... stopped being related. Judging by the amount of issues that the POE mats seem to have had I wonder if Hyalite got fed up with crap products coming from POE's manufacturers and decided to do their own thing?

I'm not sure where this leaves me.

The only POE mats to suffer were the very light weight air mats (I forget the name). All the others were / are fine inc' the Ether air mats which they stopped making

I still have one of the POE mats and it's never given me any bother. It's still my first choice for bothying as I don't really fancy getting a splinter in my Neoair.
Very comfortable as long as you don't over inflate it. Personally I don't like hanging off the end of short mats.

I'm on my third POE/Hyalite Peak Elite AC. The first two suffered a leak due to a manufacturing fault. As far as I can understand, Hyalite simply bought all the POE assets.

I offloaded mine to flatfishy - couldn't justify selling something which I knew wasn't fit for purpose and I didn't want to get a replacement from the manufacturer because of its reputation. If they've any sense, they should probably stop selling them now and disassociate themselves with the product as much as possible, as things stand I'd avoid anything branded Hyalite like the plague and there are probably many others in a similar place.

I have had a PO elite 3/4 for about 2 years and have recently bought an exped down lite which I much prefer despite the extra weight. I would only use the POE for summer, ultra light duties now.

The mat Composite is talking about is a self inflating affair, not one of the self destructing air mats ... has anyone had issues with the POE / Hyalite self inflating mats?

I'm looking at either:

I'm going from a POE air mattress with no insulation but was still warm enough in a mild winter, was fine down to about -3. I'm trying to work out if the thinner (3 season) 2.5cm one is going to be warm enough or if I should get the thicker (4 season) 3.8cm one and suck up the extra weight. At the mo thinking the thinner and come proper cold winter bivis use an extra mat. TBH the majority of my trips will be in the 3 seasons rather than the 4th.

Last time I spoke to Hyalite, they were waiting on a new batch of mats to come through - having fixed the production issue that was causing the fault (it's a poor weld).
