Snow bivi'ing photos

Post by JohnClimber »

Please inspire me for a deep winter bivi which is something I've not done yet.

Please show me your bivi's, tarps or tents set up in snow.

This was as close as I've got to snow

No, the bivi was just off the summit of Fan-y-big, and sunrise looking east to Craig Cwareli.

I've done a few.

Here's what photos I can find.....

December quick overnighter:

Easter (ish) this year with Gian in the Jura mountains:

From February this year (slept under an overhanging roof as waist deep powder and -16°c temps made for tricksy bivying):

John (and all),

Am planning on posting something in the UK fatbikes forum about this but it fits here too.....

I was thinking that it might be nice to see if we can't get a group together for a winter Jura fatbikepacking trip.

It's a very quick drive up into the hills from Geneva airport (cheap easyjet from UK) and i could meet people there with the Landover (and possibly trailer if there were enough folks) and we could have a couple of nights of snow bivi fun.

Just an idea.

Oh to be single and have spare holidays.

Unless it's between Christmas Day and New Year then there is a slight chance.
I've just checked the flight prices and over xmas is silly money but the week before xmas is cheap.
Gonna need to speak to the boss then the boss at home if it's that week.

Not sure there's such a thing as a lame bivi in the snow.

They're all (to differing degrees) hardcore.

It could be as short as fly out Friday evening and return Sunday evening and still mean two nights bivying and two big days riding in the snow.

Also, those are the worst dates of the year to fly to Geneva as the ski crowd are heading out in droves for the holidays.

Somewhere between mid January and mid March would be best.

I'm allowed (?) one trip away each year, was tempted with the north coast 500 but a fat bike trip could be good. Keep me posted (but certainly don't plan around me)

In Chamonix in March with the wifey snowshoeing, can't wait :-)

Not snow but it was well below freezing. All my bottles froze. I had to crack through the ice to get water, and then crack through again in the morning (one pic shows the rock I used on top of the ice)

Was a walking trip and spent the next day walking in a base layer, paramo jacket and primaloft overlayer, took me ages to get vaguely warm

Supposedly the first weekend in spring/March - Elan valley
