Pillow talk

Post by JohnClimber »

Like some people have lots of tents or tarps. I like pillows in the hunt for the perfect nights sleep.

I think I may have finally (for now) found it, I slept on it last night at home and found it brilliant once it was deflated from maximum a little.

My pillow of choice was the large THE SEA TO SUMMIT AEROS PREMIUM PILLOW weighing in at 114g for the large and costing now around £34.99,
It was great for a side sleeper like me but still moved around at night.

At home I use the IKEA ROSENSKÄRM Ergonomic Pillow which is shaped for side sleeping

And it works really well for me.

But for camping I've always struggled to get to sleep especially on the first night.

Then the Flextail Cozy Pillow popped up with a free delivery and a discount code for just over £14 on my Facebook feed so I thought I'd give it a try.

It's double to triple the weight of my other pillows and a larger packed size too, but if it gives me a better sleep and recovery while I'm out it's got to be a win.
I'll use it at home for a couple more nights to get the pressure right (when low the TPU membrane does make a slight crinkling sound when you move.
And before I trip I'll use it for 2 or 3 nights at home to get used to it again.

So fingers crossed to a better sleep when away for 2025

Interesting. Bit of a porker though. But as you say a good pillow can make a huge difference - probably the most important item from a comfort point of view.

With all the various pillows that we've all bought to try out we could probably open a shop ourselves....

Yeh, but leave it deflated and roll it up into your sleeping bag before you crush it down should help save space in your pack.

For what it's worth, I have been very happy with this one I got from Amazon.
Packs down small, has a nice valve, the fabric feels ok, not too crinkly and has a strap to go round the back of your mat.

I do heartily agree that a pillow os very important! A crap night's sleep makes me an unhappy boy.

I have the same Sea to Summit pillow as you John (can't remember which size it is) and think it could be better as a side sleeper. I was hoping there'd be a solution that weighs less that 250g but agree if it gets you a good night's sleep, it's weight worth carrying.

That one looks quite interesting - one of the problems with the StS one is my head tends to roll off the side easily whereas that has quite a big dip in the middle. The StS blurb says "Curved internal baffles create contours that cradle your head" but I'm not aware of it.

Great pillow, I've had two, both deflate overnight. Pushed them underwater and found multiple pinprick streams of air ... I can only suspect my beard as being the culprit.
Moved to Sea to Summit, no more issues :-bd

Same here. No matter how much air is in it, my head feels like it's resting on a balloon, so I get the head roll thing too. Shame as it's excellent otherwise.

Hence I've gone back to my Exped pillowpump which has some foam inside it allowing my head to sink in slighlty but also cradled so no rolling. The payment for that is unfortunately 140g but then again it does pump my mat up too!

If the price for a good nights sleep is a few extra grams then that’s worth it.
