2x10 update time

Post by dlovett »

The 2x10 in the Vir Fortis could do with an update. It’s normally running 26x4 but I do have a set of 29er wheel I use in it. Been using sram rival 11ams for about with years on the Camino so I would be happy to switch from Shimano if needed.

The 2x10 is Xt shifters and mechs with a sun race 11-42 cassette and 22/36 race face rings. This gives an amazing range for going anywhere. Ideally I would like to go to 1x but want to keep as much as the range and actually gain a bit of top end as it spins about too easily on normal road speeds. Can modern shimano compatible 11/12/13 speeds fit on a 10 spd hub ? If so is there a cassette ring combo that would be as good or am I going to loose a lot of range going. 1x. If it have to change the hub then I guess all the sram options become available.

What’s your collective thoughts ta.

I'm pretty sure you can get a 11 or 12 speed 11-51 cassette for an HG hub body if you look at sunrace stuff

12 speed goes on a standard hub. I have one an old hope pro 2
Go to sheldon gear calculator* ( use inches not ratio) and see what you have now and what 1 x does with various front rings
Fwiw i went from a 2 x 11 to.1 x 12 ( road) and my range is easiest is between first and second and hardest is just more than 21.
You will likely lose some range, but not much

* use the right tyre and wheel.size !!

My new bike has 1x12 (51/10)

My old 2x10 on the 26 still has a wider range with less gaps (and less unsprung mass on the rear wheel)

Progress eh?

I know everyone loves Sheldon and rightly so, but I find this gear calculator easier to use than his as you can visually compare your current and alternatives.

This is my 2x10 'roadie gravel' setup compared to my 1x11 'gravelly gravel'.

Some More Background info

On the Camino 650x47 I have Sram Rival 1 1x11 for normal use road/off road use

Gear Ratios with 40-10/42 4.0, 3.33, 2.86, 2.5, 2.22, 1.9, 1.67, 1.43, 1.25, 1.11, 0.95
Cog 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 28, 32, 36, 42
Speed 7.24-30.49km/h @60 10.86-45.74km/h @90
Ratio 0.952-4

I've also got a 36t oval to replace the 40t as I don't often find the need to hit more that 30kph on the straights much, but after a year, I've still not actually fitted it. It should become the "new" all round drive train as I living in Britain's flattest city, I am keen to do some more hilly Audux's.

Gear Ratios with 36-10/42 3.6 3 2.57 2.25 2.0 1.71 1.50 1.29 1.13 1.0 0.86
Cog 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 28, 32, 36, 42
Speed 6.56-27.44 @60 9.83-41.16km/h @90
Ratio 0.857-3.6

I also have an identical cassette, chain and jockey wheels that I use with an oval 26t for super special events I have ridden like BB's YD/MYN/ITT's/Multi days. On and then off again when home.

Gear Ratios with 26-10/42 2.6 2.17 1.86 1.63 1.44 1.24 1.08 0.93 0.87 0.72 0.62
Cog 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 28, 32, 36, 42
Speed 4.7-19.8km/h @60 7.09-29.73km/h @90
Ratio 0.619-2.6

The 2X10 I want to replace is on the Vir Fortis (26x4 or 29x2.2) and it's currently:
Cassette Sunrace MX3 10-Speed Cassette 378g 11-13- 15- 18- 21-24- 28-32- 36- 42
Inner Ring 22 Ratios 2.0, 1.7, 1.5, 1.2, 1.1, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5
Outer Ring 36 Ratios 3.3, 2.8, 2.4, 2.0, 1.7, 1.5, 1.3, 1.1, 1.0, 0.9
Speed 4.07-25.4km/h @60 6.11-38.2km/h @90 Not sure I believe the speeds as it spins out in on the road in low 30's at way more than 90!!

So you can see the 1x10 range is pretty good. I guess a 1x12 Cassette would more or less work but would require new shifter (£50), mech (£80) freehub (£80!!!!!!), cassette (£95), chain (£25) and ring (£67 30-32-34 rings only). A 1x11 would require an additional chain ring and chain to give a high and low set I could switch to if really needed, but would mean I could get used shifters (£25) and mech (£25) in addition to the cassette 11-46 (£50), chain (£25) and rings (£55) unless 10 spd rings work with 11spd setup. Sadly the rings are very different and couldn't move between the bikes SRAM GXP X-Sync and Raceface Affect X-Type.

Now I have looked at it in terms of real numbers (and crazy cost), I guess it's the fear of not have a low enough gear that I might only really need for the very occasional hill, on an event, when loaded with gear, extremely knackered when walking/pushing might actually be faster, Verses a range that's actually used all year round on and off road without any real issues might be the answer, or just get a 2nd Chain and ring if it really is not workable on crazy events.

10 and 11 spd will fit on the same hub. unsure about 12 spd, i thought this was microspline ?

i am a 9 and 10 speed user. 22/32/42 on the tourer with 12/36 9spd cassette. just changed the krampus to ( dont laugh ) 20/32 front with a 12/42 10speed cassette. i love to spin uphill.

Yep 11 shimano will fit on the current hg hope free hub, but 11/12/13 sram need and xd free bib that hope make and 12 shimano also needs a new free hub that hope might make. Just waiting to hear back from them, as it’s a fatso hub which should mean a pro4 free hub should fit.

Still it’s all a lot more money than I thought it would be. Used 11 spd is looking the best option as after selling off the 10 speed stuff it’s about £109 upgrade.

It does not need a new freehub for 12 speed.and i have used Garbaruk and SRAM on a standard hub ( not xd or microspline) and shimano .casettes at 11 speed and 10 .I dont have a 12 speed shimano cassette.sonpossible it does not fit ( but shimanom12 speed mech and shifter works on a sram.12 speed casette so i cannot see how they are wider.

All of them are the same width but the gap between the cogs varies with 12 smaller than 9 speed. My hope 2 started life as 9 and has been all sizes to its current 12 speed with the same freehub.
Chains are all different sizes due to this

Road is slightly wider but a mtb will.fit road with a spacer. Its possible 12 speed shimano wont fit but other makes 100% do as i run them.and have done thousands of miles
