Spearfish owners
Im not trying to start one of those which is the best tyre for threads - i just bought Ian Fitz’s spearfish frame and am in the process of building it up. The clearance at the rear is really tight - not just the width so much as the height under the seatstay bridge. I usually ride fully rigid and like bigger (not plus) tyres so I put a 2.35. Hans damf on a stand flow off my hardtail as an experiment and there is less than 5mm!
What rear tyres are people running / have run on thre spearfish? Would like to know what has worked rather than blind experimentations!
Thanks

Re: Spearfish owners
Bontrager XR2 2.2 on mine. Not had it long enough to try anything else. Mine's one of the original non split pivot frames.

Mine too. Not tried bontrager tyres - they pretty true to width?

Re: Spearfish owners
2.2 Conti X-King here, split pivot, space - not too tight I don't think, I'll nip downstairs and measure it.
Edit - about 18mm to the bridge, 10mm or so each side. Pretty sure I've had 2.4 X-Kings in there. All on 22mm internal rims.

Re: Spearfish owners
When I had my Mk1 Spearfish I think the biggest treads I used were 2.25 Nobby NIcs on crests. Fwiw it came with 2.2 X-Kings out of the box.

Re: Spearfish owners
Wow - not getting anything like that - Tried another back wheel this time a wtb wolverine 2.2 on a wtb speed disc rim.
I only seem to be getting 5 or 6mm to the bridge with that as well. I would have I expected the Hans damf to have been tight but though this would have given more room. Hmm....

Re: Spearfish owners
Normally I run 2.2 X-Kings, but am running maxxis crossmark 2's currently....have also ran 2.4 X-Kings, but that was tight!

Edit: Have you seen this page? http://salsacycles.com/culture/building ... fish_frame there's a bit at the bottom about tyre size.

Re: Spearfish owners
No I hadn’t - cheers for that.
Think my wolverines must becoming up big for a 2.2 then. I shall wave a tape at them in anger in the morning.
Cheers for the replies - anyone else out there with a spearfish any other options greatly appreciated.

Re: Spearfish owners
Just to make you feel better though, I've had a load of bikes, and the spearfish is by far, the best I've had

Re: Spearfish owners
I think I ran a Nano on the back of my Mk1. I do recall having X-king 2.2 and a Race King in there too.
2.35 Ikon on the back of my Mk2- Carbon, and had the same on my Mk2-Alu, Aka, Ians' bike.

Re: Spearfish owners
Greg, I’ve got a 2.35 ikon and it’s massive! If I ran that with the spearfish I’d only have a few mm under the seatstay bridge.
Am I missing something or did you run it that tight??

Re: Spearfish owners
So in the end got a good deal on a 2.2 ikon which seems to fit pretty well. Dug out an old 2.35 ikon for the front.
It’s looking pretty nippy!!

Re: Spearfish owners
possibly a 2.2 on the rear. Can't recall, there is a Minion SS on it at the moment.

Re: Spearfish owners
