Re: Christmas presents
My birthday is near Christmas so I either buy myself one frivolous present or split the cost with Mrs Nuts which is what we are doing this year. A Lego Technic John Deere 948L-II Skidder (42157) is now sitting upstairs waiting to be assembled. She has just ordered herself some toilet paper printed w...

Re: Does anyone use Strava app for recording?
I'm not a Strava user but to avoid the "straight line" problem try the following :- 1. Go into Settings / Apps / All Apps / Strava / Permissions / Location / then choose "Allow all the time" The following settings may or may not exist depending on Android version. 2. Go into Sett...

Re: Missing the point?
The GPX/digital vs Paper map discussion seems to be generating lots of views I have never considered. I have a bit of a map fettish so spend a lot of time looking at paper and digital maps and planning routes. In the olden days, before GPS and digital maps I used paper maps like everybody else. I fo...

Re: Trangia kit - too bulky for bikepacking?
Slow to cook with but very reliable and bomb proof. It's sad I know but I kept a note of the time to boil 400ml of water and it was 8 minutes. I only used the actual burner and the aluminium stand thingy it sat in. The rest of the Trangia kit I didn't buy because of its size but I found a Snow Peak ...

Re: Missing the point?
Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick? But I'm really not sure why anyone would be bothered by this? If it encourages people to get onto bikes and out into the countryside then surely that's a good thing. There's already enough gatekeeping, elitism, tribalism and snobbery in cycling which disco...

Re: Missing the point?
Come do a 100km adventure ride in remote wales is far better (on insta) than just ride a tame signposted trail you could take your nan and kids on tonthe mug danglers amd armchair adventurers Don't knock it. If it gets more people onto bikes its good. I'm not a nan but I am a granddad so looking to...

Re: Radar/Camera/Rear light
I ride with a Tooo cycling rear camera. It lasts for 8 hours and I’ve had 3 drivers prosecuted using it. In Devon we have operation snap which is great and they always respond to the real bad ones I upload Good to know. I had only heard of the Garmin but have since found a few others with the help ...

Re: Radar/Camera/Rear light
fatbikephil - I agree with you completely but the combination of radar and camera/video facility adds another dimension to our defence. I watch a lot of cycling youtube videos. The latest Cade Media production is particularly interesting. The police appear to be keen to act on the video footage and ...

Radar/Camera/Rear light
I haven't spent enough money on my bike this year (nothing come to think of it) and I'm considering splashing out on a Garmin Varia RTC 715. I'm fed up of people in cars squeezing past me where there isn't enough room even though only about 5% of my riding is on roads. Of course nothing is simple an...

Typical UK mentality now though....... appeasing the masses A bit late to this party but unfortunately "appeasing the masses" sounds like democracy. For a long time now I've thought democracy is seriously flawed but can't think of anything better. you could say what you wanted as a fast w...

Re: Proposed Wind Farm near Glaslyn
Nukes are costly, not green and have an unsolvable problem ( assuming we could actually find someone to build them and a place to put them) Your use of the word nukes shows you are already biased against nuclear power. I am talking about nuclear power generation plants = good Not nukes = nuclear we...

I'm afraid the plants and animals will have to go How do you see that working out for your children and grandchildren? This has been taken out of context. If you read the whole paragraph it should be clear that I'm referring to the plants and animals that will be displaced by the wind farms not eve...

Re: Proposed Wind Farm near Glaslyn
I've been reading the posts on the proposed wind farm and trying not to pitch in but now I've cracked. I'm sure there will be a certain amount of verbal abuse coming my way but I really feel the need to make a few comments. In the UK there are a whole lot of us crammed into a small space and we need...

Re: If you go down to the woods ...
I've just realised it's an actual human type person crouched on all fours.
Look at the far left of the picture. That's a human leg. The two skinnier ones to the right are the arms with a head held down between them.
Wierd or spooky or both.
Either that or this beer's stronger than I thought.

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
I've been reading the comments about mapping/navigation software because I have a bit of a map fetish and generally like to try new stuff to see how it compares with my goto route planning and navigation software. No one has mentioned OziExplorer which is a bit of a surprise so I will mention it now...

Re: All day comfortable, do-it-all waterproof trousers?
I'll be over the moon if someone comes up with a pair of trousers that fits the above specification. I will go out and buy them immediately! I'm new to cycling but spent 30 years looking for trousers like this for hill walking. Without finding anything that came close! Trousers described as waterpro...

Re: Pinion Gearbox???
I'm referring to the ebike drive motor. When I first heard about the Pinion motor/gearbox I couldn't find any mention of a motor manufacturer which would make me a bit wary until there are a number of them in the wild.
I haven't looked for a while though so perhaps details are available now.

Re: Pinion Gearbox???
The electronic shifting description is almost a word for word copy of the Rohloff text which is a shame but overall the combination of electronic shifting, wide gear range, belt drive and integrated motor sounds like a combination that will be hard to beat. I can't find any details about the pedigre...

Re: Advice on Filtering water
Didn't think about a swear filter especially because it was a book title and not some angry rant - must remember to preview. On the wierdness of water, it is the only known substace that expands when it is cooled (below 4°C) and also expands when it is heated above 4°C So the frozen solid floats on ...

Re: Advice on Filtering water
My last post was modified and "sub standard" has replaced one word of the books title. Perhaps I should have expected that.
I hope this works, the book's title is How to (4 letter word starting with S, ending with t and rhyming with hit) In the Woods.

Re: Advice on Filtering water
How to sub standard in the woods by Kathleen Meyer I had this book a few years ago but it has dissapeared since moving house. Probably during a serious book cull. I remember it had an excellent section on the need for water filtration. I don't remeber the details but it did prompt me to buy a Katady...

Re: Trek Freehub - Powefly 5
Thanks for the info and advice. Yes I'll try swapping the bearings myself next time but I've had really good service from my local Trek dealer and it seemed like an easy and painless route to take. My local shop are blaming Trek and I believe them. Trek spares come from "the continent" whi...
