Re: Fat bike curious. What would you recommend
Got a Salsa Blackborow in July, the geared version. I absolutely love it, I just don't ride it on the road if I can avoid it, try it and you will see why…. especially uphill  On anything else it is fantastic, although I don't have much to compare it to apart from my other mountain bike which i...

Re: Forkin cages!
Ive used gorilla cages for four 2 week trips now with 8L dry bag in each one containing sleeping bag, waterproofs, sleeping mat, maybe a gas cylinder too. They've been great although the load bounces around a bit on rough ground they have never come off, or broken. They are mounted on a rigid fork. I...

Trangia burner with trangia triangle and MSR titan kettle for me .
Big enough you can cook a decent size portion of porridge/ pasta/what have you, not ultra light but light enough and you already have the burner.

Re: food on the second day of a multiday ride.
I think its fairly normal to have decreased appetite in these circumstances. The hunger hormone ghrelin is suppressed during strenuos exercise but then increases for a time afterwards which is why a lot of us feel hungry for a day or days after prolonged events. I myself suffer from nausea occasiona...

Re: Layering
Rab wind veil pull on and Mountain HardWear ghost whisperer down jacket my two most useful layering items.
Merino wool base layer for multi day rides (don't smell) and waterproof jacket and you're covered for most eventualities.
The wind shirt makes a huge difference despite being very light/thin

Re: Touring/Unpaved Road bicycle
32 rear sprocket but Sram have brought out a 11-36 cluster for this group set and perhaps even add a range extender? The mech's the limiter, you need a longer cage version for the 36, available as OE soon and on the 2016 Arkose 5. tbh I really like the Arkose and have used it for some longer weeken...

Re: Touring/Unpaved Road bicycle
I really like the Rove too, but the gearing is also too high. I'm not familiar with Sram gearing and compatabilities. I've used SPA cycles own triple cranks and you can specify an inner ring as low as 24. They use an ultra reliable square taper BB and I.ve never had any issues with them. Fit them to...

Re: Touring/Unpaved Road bicycle
I've done a fair bit of long distance touring on a steel framed tourer (won't take bigger than a 32mm tyre) and also my 1990's Orange Gringo MTB, but even with my favourite touring tyres (continental travel contact 26x1.75) its slow on tarmac so I'm seriously considering a Vaya myself for exactly th...

Re: exped sleeping bags and mats
Haven't tried their bags but have a Synmat UL7 with about 50 nights on it and I find it really comfortable and packs down small, quick to inflate/deflate. Recently got a pinhole puncture in it probably pice of sharp grit I think, easy to fix with supplied repair kit, once I eventually found the punc...

Presume the blue 2014 has the carbon fork and the 2011, steel.
Can you notice the difference when riding and if so what are the pros/cons do you reckon?

Re: Bike Luggage Setup – Advice
I can't comment on the frame bag issue - I have custom alpkit frame bag and its fantastic! I tried a Kanga harness but it was fiddly to set up and TBH don't like stuff on my bars. I've been using Gorilla cages on the forks for 3 week long trips now and they're great. I put sleeping bag, stove, air m...

Re: Salsa Fargo
Thanks for the feedback… certainly gives food for thought. It seems from what I gather from here, and from asking others, that the Fargo is the do everything bike, but polarises opinion, and for some despite the do it everything label is a little unloved? I suppose after all there's no such thing as...

Re: Salsa Fargo
Yes Charlie, Triton cycles used to have them but don't have stock and aren't getting any more apparently, I called to check. Was also considering the Vaya, seems a really good buy at the price Charlie is selling for, but probably too similar to other bikes I already have and doubt the 52 ring would ...

Has anyone got one or had one or got any opinions? Its a bike I was considering for 1-2 week trips with a mix of maybe 70/30 road/ off road, the off road being more fire roads and unsurfaced roads like you get a lot of in eg Spain. I thought it may be easier on the road than a mountain bike but stil...

Re: west highland way
I've done it north bound started 5am finished just before midnight totally knackered on an unloaded bike. Section of hike a bike at top of Loch Lomond was memorable, but not for good reasons! Had a little bit of walking on some parts of Conic hill too. I found the whole thing harder and took longer ...
