Materials for sleeping bag cover and liner?

Post by flanagaj »

After 3 sleepless weeks in a mummy bag last year I have decided I need to make a custom setup for my thermarest mat that will enable me to use quilts instead of mummy bags. My plan is to make a custom cover which I slide the thermarest mat into and which incorporates a full length zip down the side. I can then attach a breathable and baggy lightweight outer shell onto the zip. I can then use quilts inside the outer bag in the knowledge that the quilts will not touch the inner flysheet of the tent and get damp.

Whilst camping along the divide last September I was constantly waking up in a tent dripping with condensation and trying to dry my down bag. I did take a PHD bag cover with me, but it was terribly constraining and being a mummy cover design with no zip you could not move inside it.

Just wondering what materials people would recommend for the waterproof / breathable cover and the thermarest mat liner.

Would ripstop breathable nylon work for the cover and taffeta for the mat cover?

Thanks

That seems a little complicated when something like a large Borah bivvy will do exactly the same thing - keep your mat in place and keep any damp off your quilt without restricting your movement. Borah will also keep the insects out too.

Anyway, I digress. If you do want to g down the MYOG route, I'd consider water resistant rather than waterproof for the top as it generally breathes better. Although, if you weren't bothered about weight / cost, I'd possibly use eVent. General / non-specific PU coated nylon will handle the base okay.

The key thing is to keep the weight down as much as possible. ideally, I would like to try and get the whole thing down to under 400g?

I have seen ripstop for 60g/sqm, I suspect the pu coated nylon will come in under that.

Borah weighs about 200g and will scrunch down to the size of your fist.

PU tends to be heavier as the coating is quite heavy and it's often coated on both sides.

Ok, that is light. I'll investigate further.

Apologies, I meant non pu coated. eg, for the sleeping mat cover.
