Advice from SPOT users.

Post by Artie Fufkin »

Evening all,
Am thinking of getting a SPOT tracker for all the normal reasons and just wondering which way to go really?
I have seen the SPOT 2 at around £40-50 on eBay, and new SPOT Gen3 at £110 posted which are both good prices and the Gen 3 does have better spec.
Once I have decided on which model I am going for, then we enter the minefield of service plans. The SPOT 2 has a very limited basic plan and upgrading to tracking would bring it to the same price as the basic plan with a Gen 3. Then is it worth upgrading to the unlimited tracking package which will track all the time?
Can somebody give me a little advice and perhaps shed some light on what seems to be most popular around these parts? I will mostly be using it in the UK, for trips upto a week that may well be out of mobile phone coverage so piece of mind for me and mine is good!
Thanks in advance,
Adam.

Spot 3 user here. My understanding is that the 3 has much better battery life (partly due to better components/design and partly due to "smart" signalling that switches off when you are stationary for long periods). Certainly a factor in week-long trips? I have the Unlimited Tracking package and currently use the 5-minute setting. No real reason other than it was available at a reduced rate when I signed up.

You can get SPOT3 with 'unlimited tracking' included until end of June if you buy through an authorised dealer.
Thats three days to decide. :???:
Make sure you read the small print as I expect its only free for year 1.

Cheers Mariner,
Seems to be found on the SPOT website, and like the man said if purchased before 30/06/15 then you get the unlimited package free. For how long and with what catch, who knows? I may be wrong and they may genuinely be giving it you forever, for free!
There is only one way to find out!
Cheers for the replies.

I think it does apply to the UK. Been doing a bit of research and seems like the enhanced tracking feature comes as part of the basic service plan on the Gen 3 models.
Looks like a goer to me!
Cheers and many thanks.

I bought one recently and told them about that particularly screw up on their site... apparently they didn't change it, but I did get a year worth of the extreme tracking.

It's definitely not part of their basic service.

Cheers for the heads up, Richard.
Will try that one myself, will be pushing the button tonight or tomorrow.
