I hate GPS

Post by Clink »

I know they make nav simple but I can never easily upload routes/tracks onto my etrex 20. I've created a gpx in osmaps, loaded it onto the device - it shows up when plucked into PC as being there, but when turn on device no sign. Its driving me insane! Somebody pleeease help.

Is it in the right folder?
Is it a route or a track?

Saved via bikehike as track; saved in both J and K drives that appear on PC

Done it - but don't know how. Saved it into every folder I could find. I have this problem every time I use it.

I have the same problem with my etrex20.
I think it's just me doing it wrong though, I get confused by the various options of "gpx" and "tcx" file formats coupled with the "Courses" and "Tracks" folders.

The plotaroute auto download using garmin connect doesnt work for saving to it either.

Can you see the file on your GPS in a folder somewhere?

If so click "show on map"

Export as GPX track (using whatever online tool you like), then put it in the GPX folder on the device. When you load the device, go to the menu, then "Where To" and select the track you put there.

You can also select the track via tracks, and do what JC said by selecting "Show on Map".

Thanks guys. Richard - I did exactly what you said numerous times - nothing there. I'm convinced I've done the same in the past - I'm sure it must be me but I can never guarantee one method will work. As I said above I've now ccopied it into both internal drive and memory card and it now shows up.

I too have an etrex 20 and have found it to be not the easiest device to use.
After dragging and dropping the track into the garmin gpx file I find it on the unit by going into menu, then track manager, then show on map.

And how many times have I pressed the joystick thinking it will re centre on my location, doh.

Very odd. I've used that method tens of times and never had a problem.

I've never had a problem uploading to my eTrex20 or 30. One suggestion is be wary of online tools, they don't care if they adhere to any standards or inject junk or ill formatted text that could break a gpx files format and render it unusable to a device. I would suggest using basecamp to make/edit your gpx files for your Garmin since that's what they made it for. It's free, works well, has lots of features, and above all, is made for the device you are using and cares about the standards it needs to operate correctly. :-bd
