Fuel for stove in Iceland

Post by Drillmaster1 »

Hi all

Im going to be in Iceland for 17 days in June.
Does anyone know which is the most common fitting of gas canister in Iceland, is it the screw on type, the twist and lock, or the one that you pierce?
I'm referring to the Camping Gaz types here.
I have adapters for all 3 for my stove but obviously prefer to carry as little as possible, the adaptor for the pierce type is also quite heavy.
I also have an alcohol stove which is smaller and lighter, is the fuel widely available there?

Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

Hi,

I have been to Iceland a couple of times and always carried an MSR pocket rocket with screw on type gas cannister. Never had any trouble finding gas.

Quick tip: On arrival to Iceland, (presuming you'll get into Reykjavik) head over to the campsite on Sundlaugavegur http://www.reykjavikcampsite.is/. Both times I've been to Iceland, this has provided an excellent base from which to prepare for the trip into the unknown. They sell gas and have a shelf full of half-used (some almost full) gas canisters that people have left as they couldn't take on plane. The last time I went, I didn't need to buy any gas as I was lucky enough to bag a couple of almost full canisters.

The staff are also really friendly and the campsite is well equipped if you're into that sort of thing. I found it gave me a fair bit of comfort before setting out into the wild and returning from the wild.

It's also full of fun, like-minded people.

I had no problem with screw top canisters. They sell them in the shop at the campsite in Reykjavik. In fact, there are loads of half full ones left on the "freebie" shelf at the campsite as people leave them before flying back.

^^^ A camp site that is presumbably after making a profit and sells gas but also gives away free gas. I'm liking Icelanders already :-bd , bet you wouldn't find that in many, or even any places in Britain  .

I loved Iceland Ray. Their biggest income is tourism so tourists are treated really well and the country is geared up to offer excursions.
Although it is pricey generally, camping at the designated sites is reasonable (£6 ish pppn) and as a backpacker, I had a relatively cheap trip.
Great vibe at the campsites too.

Yes, the screw on canisters are readily available as has been said. Fuel stations sell them too if you run out...

Fabulous place. Saving up to go back myself.

That place will also store your bike bag and will provide a free shuttle from the airport if you stay in the hostel

Cool thats great to know thanks.
I usually discard the box and carry a CTC plastic bag with me for the return, but it takes a bit of space and weighs about 500g
I've wanted to go for about 20 years and finally getting the chance so greatly looking forward to it!
