Surly Long Haul Trucker

Post by TheRhysman »

Hi guys,

I have come into possession of a Surly Long Haul Trucker and really, really want to spec it out for bike packing.

I wondered if you guys would see this as possible? Do people bike pack with tourers?

Cheers all, hope this weather is keeping you well.

Ride what you've got :-bd The only thing that would trouble me is not having disc brakes but saying that we rode without for years and mostly survived okay. I'm unsure of the max tyre size of the LHT but I'd have thought you'd get a 1.75" in there which will be fine ... just be careful selecting your tyres.

People have taken far less burly stuff over some pretty challenging terrain.

I actually have a real softspot for the 26" wheeled LHT ... it's just so ugly, it's beautiful.

This one looks suitably 'bikepacky'

You could get some on-one midges (http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HBOOMI/on- ... handlebar) or similar on there, I love mine for off-road, road touring and commuting use. I think they're more comfy than reg'lar drops, but everyone's different.

And they look rad/weird.

That has sold me tenfold.

Done!

My old man bought one and has hardly used it, so ill get it off him. We're the same height so the frame size is bang on. Now to tear off that pannier rack, slap on some nice tyres and boom!

So many thanks guys.

I've seen people put Jones loop bars on bikes similar to that (Dave42w) and it looks vaguely exciting!

Loads on the surly fans face book page and plenty of guys using LHTs for bikepacking on and off road in the US. Have a look on flickr etc.
