Single Speed Chain Link

Hello, I have years of experience of using quick links for connecting 9/10 speed chains. Products like Sram powerlinks etc work great.

For single speed (e.g. 8 speed ) chains the standard offering tends to be the kind that has the two parts with a slide on faceplate. I'm not keen on these but suspect there is a reason they are bike shops standard offerings.

Any advice/experience on the best way to link single speed chains, in particular when you want to carry field spares?
Any recommended brands?

I ran 1.8" track chain singlespeed for years (with matching 1/8" bits) and it lasted forever and didn't break. I used to just bring a few spare links with me just in case and accept you're gonna have to fiddle a tiny bit more than a quick link

I might have misunderstood but I'm using these on several bikes without any problems. I have a feeling my town bike has 3 or 4 in the current chain...

I think Ian means the links with a spring clip rather than the 'quick link' type?



I've never had an issue with the spring clip type links, either push bike or motorbike ... I do tend to put a tiny dab of silicone sealer on the clip when used on a motorbike though just to prevent the clip from vanishing

I use SS 1/8th chains (KMC 510 see link ) - when running either a hub gear or SS. These come with a breakable split link (always been in 2 halfs and NOT as pictured)

I do carry a spare plit link and a few links of normal chain just in case. It's one area where a breakage could stop progress, not that Ive had any problems

I was bit unsure if it was an 8 speed 3/32" "geared" chain or a 1/8" singlespeed chain he was referring to, either way there seem to be plenty of options for both!

Cheers folks, yes the spring clip is what I have used so far. I was hoping for something like the power-link because they are a bit easier to fit when you are gibbering on t' moor. However, the spring clip type seem they should be more durable. I saw there are some 8 speed quick links and wondered if there was any experience.

I'll stick to the tried and tested.
