bungee stuff

Post by Yorlin »

Just some very basic questions about bungee cords! I'm looking at strapping things into my anything cages, and figuring out various other luggage stuff, and wondering about bike/tarp attachments. I always thought a bungee was a bungee was a bungee but it turns out there's loads of different sorts and places to get em from.

Is there good kinds and bad kinds? Or will the ones from the petrol station do just fine? How thick is too thick?

And should I order some sort of fancy sort of 'special' hooks? I did look online and there are a number of slightly confusing options - is bungee the same as shock cord? And there are nice clippy hooks to go on the end, instead of the scratchy metal ones.

Or do real men just use string and sailor knots?

TL:DR - where should I buy my bungee cord and hooks from?

For a weight saving idea i would recommend velcro ( hook and loop ) staps. Check out the ones on backpackinglight.co.uk
The type they sell are infinitely adjustable.
I use similar ones ( 20mm wide ) to tie my stuffsack onto my handlebars so they will be plenty strong enough for anything cages

I'd rather have a nylon strap or velcro than bungee cords. I struggle to get the latter tight enough when there's a limited number of hooking points and th elastic deteriorates. Your LBS probably sells pedal straps that would work just fine,

Ah great, thanks Scotroutes and Mtbmarkymark! When you put it like that, velcro or nylon straps do sound better. Will hop over to backpackinglight just now. :)

Velcro - loop one side and hook the other
available on amazon

I use it to hold the wheels on my roof bike carrier
