Sus fork for Krampus

Post by Dusza »

I'm trying to find a suitable suspension fork for a Krampus frame. It's for regular 29er tyres, not 29+ so clearance is not a big issue - though increased clearance would be nice for future DirtWizzard on narrower rims (ZTR Flow, Blunt35, Dualy?).

I'm after a non tapered steerer, 15mm QR, possibly 100-120mm (internally adjustable)... having big trouble finding anything that meets this criteria since most of the 29er forks come with tapered steerers.

I'm running now a 80mm Manitou Tower Pro fork and I'm quite happy with it and have found one that has everything except the adjustability. Also spares for Manitou are rather hard to find.

Are there any options for CaneCreek 40 series that would allow running a tapered fork in a headset meant for straight steeres without the need of changing the lower cups?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Im toying with the Krampus idea fro bikepacking duties
Was thinking that with big 29+ 3'' tyres, thats 75mm of inbuilt suspension already
Do you really need it?

Composite, thanks for the links - I'll have a closer look at those forks.

Mart, you're probably right, although for trail riding I'd rather have some fun on the descents with a suspension fork. Not that riding rigid isn't fun, but once I gain some speed I can't see sh*t - my head starts to wobble like crazy. There's only so much you can do with proper elbow work
It's more the increased clearance that does it for me on this frame - not so much gunk on the drivetrain in muddy conditions, so I'll be building up a lighter set of burly wheels with some Stan's Flows for touring duty.

I've been riding my 29er Pugsley loaded for the last 1.5 month over some tough terrain running a Velocity OC rim in the back and Ardents with great success. Loved the huge clearance I had, was just wishing for more trail-worthy geometry - hence the Krampus idea it seems to have both when running standard wheels.

I'll definitely give 29+ a try, there's a lot good opinions on that. Yet I wouldn't like to rely on Knards and Rabbit Holes in some Eastern European country.

Burty, great to hear you're liking your Kramps when fully loaded. Makes me feel like I'm aiming for the right thing. How do you like the ride in flat terrain?

Also I'm nosy, how are you attaching those wee bags to the sides of your forks? :ugeek:

Spent ages googling about for Salsa Anything cages to find they are out of production... :(

Yorlin, there's a new beefed up version that should be available soon. From the pictures in seems they've done it right this time:

Yorlin, you can also get something similar called a monkii cage. Stu reviewed them in the "reviews and ramblings" section on the home page. Scroll to the bottom and click on older posts to find it.

Funny you mention that, I heard yesterday that there's a 'Gorilla Cage' in the offing ... think Monkii but bigger ;)

Ah the monkii looks very interesting, but a bigger version/salsa-a-like is even more so!
