Insulated trouser recommendations?

Post by thenorthwind »

With my birthday and winter round the corner, I'm thinking about replacing my army surplus insulated trousers with something a bit lighter, more compact and better fitting. They're great for long bothy evenings or just sitting around on camping trips.

Any recommendations? I was thinking down for maximum packability, but haven't ruled out decent synthetic, although they're not really for riding in or anything, so don't need to be especially hard-wearing.

I've been pretty cosy in my synthetic Montane Prism trousers. Feel very light to wear, keep you warm especially when sitting around at night. Pretty small/light packsize.
Can't really imagine getting anything else.

PHD Minimus down trousers.
And down socks if your feet get nippy.

May you always have tail wind.

Are your army surplus the buffalo type? I was about to recommend those, until I read "more compact"...

I've had a pair of hagloffs synthetic ones for years I really like with full side zips. Pack small but not down small.
Tried some AliExpress down ones but sizing was tiny so moved them on.

I have some fleece lined Craghoppers that are lovely. But, why not spend the money on a pair of Keela Scuffers and for the insulation grab some Dickies winter longjohns. Can't recall if mine are bamboo or merino, but very lightweight, breathable and warmth regulating. Just all round brilliance :-bd

I’ve got a pair of these, Stu has a picture of my ninja gimp suit somewhere.
Had them ages but don’t remember paying over $300 dollars for them though.

No, they're a shell with synthetic insulation inside, but they're definitely not compact. I think that style would be better than buffalo/pile lined, since they're for sitting around rather than activity.
