Recommend a waterproof jacket

Post by Rapideye »

I've had a Madison Roam jacket for a couple of years that I've really liked and which has worked really well until the zip went 2 months ago. On contacting them re. a repair, they said they'd cover it under the warranty but since then, despite emailing and phoning them, they won't return emails. I don't really know what their issue is. If they weren't going to repair it, why say they would? The service has been really poor and I've given up on them.

So, I need a waterproof jacket (20000mm) suitable for the bike and with a little space for a down jacket underneath. I did see Endura jacket recently for £150 and that is as much as I want to go price-wise. Any other suggestions?

Would recommend Mont-Bell Torrent Flyer GTX I picked up last month, but it was a bit more than the 150 mark.
206 grams of goretex paclite2, pit zips, map pocket with drain, decent sized hood that'll go over or under the helmet.
Takes my Plasma 1000 down underneath ok. Very happy with it as it kept me dry through a few days of rain in May.
Is replacing RAB Flashpoint + Montane pertex pullover.

Thanks for the replies. Didn't realise Alpkit did repairs on other brands and would've been great except it's £65 and a new Roam is about the same price. Madison have got back to me after I sent a stroppy email (don't feel good about it, but needs must sometimes) and I can now return it to them.

Of course, it may not get back to me before I go in my trip, so I'm still looking for a new jacket. The Roam is only 10000mm and I think I'm after a 20000 with decent vents. The Crikey, how much looks good but I'm not sure about the colour. I can be fussy that way. The Mont-bell also looks good but pricey. Maybe I'm just being too tight.

I got one of these, in blue/green - lightweight, small pack size and Goretex. The hood is small, so would be under helmet. Not used it much yet - https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/hgl ... tex-jacket

Next jacket I buy is gonna be this https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/pat ... ket---ss24 God Willing. The haglofs (according to reports on treklite) is only really a summer/autumn type thing.

The Patagonia (well it's a Patagonia) is ethically produced to a norther level and spoken highly of on a thread I asked about on there. Pockets aren't as roomy but at least it's (almost) for life. Good beading properties and packs down as small as the Haglofs :-bd

If you get a membership on Trek-Lite.com you also get access to the Sporshoes.com discount code. So get another 10% off.

No worries about dwr or owt wearing out and pit zips. Not as breathable as some but packs down small...

That's all I'm after for cycling. I'm too soft for winter.

Then I guess the Haglofs will be hard to beat. I think my 5 year old jacket is a similar material (paclite something) and has lasted well enough :-bd

Not soft... Too smart to be riding in winter. It clogs all my bikes up and a right pain to get going again!

Cheers, both. Had a look at both options and both worth considering. Guess I'd prefer something a bit more heavy duty, so maybe the Patagonia has the edge. I'll do a bit more research.

Madison jacket has been returned but doubt I'll get it back in time now. My Scotland trip has been put off till Aug but I'm now trying to negotiate a few days for Rebellion Way for July. Need to get around the family's needs and that is always where the difficulties lie. Either way, I'm pretty sure I'm upgrading the Madison Roam.

Loving my e-vent fjern waterproof off sports pursuits half price at 120 notes too and in a nice orange colour for the bike. Hood fits well over the helmets, I can say it definitely kept me dry on a recent trip in Scotland lots!

Mike, what's the durability look like on these Event Fjern jackets. I got my mate a down jacket off there by Fjern and it is too rather excellent. Made in EU I think (Finland or Sweden or something!?).

Don't they do a lighter, more minimal jacket in the same fabric? Storm something??

EDIT: Storm 10 - https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/pat ... ZAQAvD_BwE

The winning feature of Haglofs for me are the really long sleeves. I'm done with short sleeves channelling water into my gloves.

Thanks again, another couple to consider.

I too bought a Fjern down jacket and I'm really happy with it. I would consider a waterproof from them too. They seem to have upped their prices though.

I've just received an email from DPD to say that the repairer that Madison use are returning the jacket already. I presume they've repaired it and are not returning it for another reason. If so, that is a 2 day turnaround, when yesterday I was told they'd take between 2-4 weeks. So, from giving the worst service they've now.gone to being superb. Well done them.

I hope the repair works. Good customer service is hard to find :???:.

If not: Buffalo Windshirt, with a fleece of choice underneath. It's all you'll ever need :-bd .

Dan Murphy's review speaks volumes

Banana Fingers have the Torrentshell in green for £108. I gave my goretex paclite/cknit to my mate yesterday so a timely find (Thank God). The goretex was my excellent ME Axel and almost 5 years old. Think I'd just become bored and he's getting into mtn walking and using the bike he bought off my - my second ever bike - 25 years ago!!

Bought Alhamdulillah :-bd

Cheers, Shaf. For that price it seems like a no brainer to at least give it a go. Ordered.

Once a couple more buy from that link, we can open up our own weekly Patagonia Torrentshell Group night rides/bivvies. I hear the Peak District is always wet

Fair enough to Madison and their repairer. Jacket has turned up and looks great only 3 days after I sent it away. A black instead of green zip but no issue there. Not to good to begin but made amends.
