Poly cotton proofing?

Got a poly cotton smock, not for riding in, more for walking the dogs in.
Doesn’t have any DWR on it so in a shower yesterday it got quite damp.
Has anyone used the Nikwax cotton proof with any success for this type of garment?

Think I'd be tempted to try the wax that you rub in. Something like this
