Superb! Actually, seriously (God help me), I'm keen to do a fens jape this year - possibly in July. The flat "featureless" (sic) scenery is incredibly atmospheric. Thinking of starting at Shippea Hill. Which isn't on a hill. Apparently it's one of the "lowest" stations in the world - a nearby spot is a metre below sea level.

Full range, for when you get blast 25 miles across the fens and suddenly find out about the fen winds.

Singlespeed when it's wet. The mud has a high concentration of sand, it's a lot cheaper to run singlespeed than gears.

As someone who lives in North Norfolk (thankfully not in the Fens, but in the Breckland area), even i thought that was a wind up. I moved here as my wife is Norfolk through and through (one head, ten toes), and thought i'd hate it, but it really does grow on you and there is actually some great riding to be had.

Thankfully where i live is fairly rolling, but cycling in the Fens themselves can be bloody hard work and if you think it is easy, many of the roads are dead straight and on top of dykes, so you simply cannot escape a headwind, there used to be an event called Flat out in the Fens, 150 miles of road riding and it was tough when the wind was up as you simply cannot escape it.

Welcome to my world

I'm on the edge of the Fens and not too far from the lowest land point in Great Britain at 2.75 metres (9.0 ft) below sea level.

It can be grim at times... very grim! And like Scud has pointed out the wind is your worst enemy and there is no escape from it, at times it can feel like you are cycling through treacle backwards. Gives you a good workout!

I moved to the fens last year and can only echo the above. It has its own charm that grows on you, but the wind is brutal and incessant. I thought living in the flatlands would make cycling a doddle, turns out you feel like your on a cycling machine in a wind tunnel with no let up, ever.

Having lived in the fens beyond Peterborough for far too many years before escaping to Sheffield, I read that site with amusement/PTSD

It can be truly bleak, sometimes it felt like it was foggy for weeks. And the wind! When people wax lyrical about how great it must be to ride on the flat all the time you know they have never encountered the relentless winds - give me a hill any day, they have a top that you can reach. Whereas the wind just keeps blowing.

Feel traumatised just thinking about the place . . .although still a little interested in one of the events - we have to confront our demons after all don't we?!

Should we have an East Anglia meet up? i am happy to host anyone that fancies coming to North Norfolk, we have some pretty scenic routes and lovely coastline with some good bivvy spots and it is always nice to show people that Norfolk isn't just flat-lands and Alan Partridge!
