Map apps for iPad?

Post by Ray Young »

Does anyone know of any decent mapping apps for an iPad? I can't use OS getamap because you need silver light which iPad does not support and I have tried using Bikehike but you don't seem to have much control over cursors and even less when dragging. OS does a 1:50000 app which covers large areas, all of southern Scotland for instance for £12, but there is only 1 user review which said it did not and will not download.

I use Outdoors GB for my iPhone and iPad, has a online portal too. Can't rate it high enough and maps are way cheaper than memory map.

Viewranger. I got it for free on ipad and android. You can download free OSM map tiles or pay for OS maps.
Very easy to map routes too.

I second viewranger. It's very intuitive, can be used as a tracker to show your location to others via website and is easy to plan routes with. You can make in app purchases for custom OS tiles or complete area's. You can also use it cross platform, so I have it installed on my Ipad and Android phone. I can use all the maps I purchased on each device and routes/tracks are automatically synced between them. You can also plan routes and access maps from there Website but it's a bit clunky.

another vote for viewranger, although when used on an iphone it does kill your battery and that can be a problem when you cant fit a spare.
view ranger backup is amazing, i had a setup niggle and emailed support and was amazed to get a reply within the hour, this was late in the evening too.
