At this time of year the ground still hasn't fully warmed up so a decent mat is definitely in order. A better mat gives more bangs per gramme than a better bag.
I'm a bloater, not a weight weenie... and tbh the warm down bag packs nearly as small as my cheaper synth less warm bag ...
