I've been looking & there are some 'mountain huts', no idea if any of them are on or near the route though!

In terms of mapping, was the gpx good enough to use with Garmin base maps or do we need to acquire some Italy mapping?

I used the free mapping from openmtbmap.org and it was plenty good enough (though not perfect).

In my experience all mapping of Italy is imperfect, I don't think they've fully mapped the whole of the country yet (they're gonna finish it as soon as they've had enough coffee).
