Boot Gaiters.

Post by custardfeet »

Have just bought a pair of Giro Alpineduro cycling boots, a bit like hiking boots for mountain biking. I have been a bit concerned about water coming in though the top of the ankle when splashing through the puddles. So I have cut off the legs of an old wetsuit just below the knee, turning them upside down, I have added a hook to the front to attach it to the laces at the front of the boot & a paracord loop underneath to act as a stirrup. Works a treat! Have yet to test them on a ride, but they seem to stay in place when I'm walking around, but their not the most glamorous, but having dry feet on a long over night winter trip seems fantastic.

This is the gaiter off the boot.

And this is the boot that is hidden beneath.

Interesting idea. Let us know how they work in practice.

As long as they don't ride up off the heel of the boot, which could be fixed with an addition of a velcro tab. I am imagining them functioning in the same way as a full over shoe, which I currently use, but wouldn't fit over the new boots. It is only as good as the seal between the boot and the gaiter, so water will get underneath, but will only be a problem on river crossing and I get wet feet then in full overshoes anyway.

So have been using these over the last couple of weeks and they are fab, adds extra warmth to the boots and keeps water out.

What are the boots like?

Worth considering as replacements for MT91's?

Not sure what MT91s are, but these a good for me, 100% waterproof and warm, buy a couple of sizes up if you want thicker socks. Use them on my road bike as well, so I probably done about a 1000 miles in them, very comfy.

MT91's are the Shimano Goretex lined boots. They've been replaced with a new model.

I'm not sure they're insulated like the Giro boot which is almost better for me as tend to wear them all year round. The Giro boot though isn't leather which is a plus point in it's favour.
