Capital Trail route(or half of it) - bike choice

Post by MussEd »

Thinking of doing the Capital Trail route - half of it anyway( either getting first train down and riding home from Tweedbank or riding down and getting train back up)
- I know I should be doing the full shebang but time away from family duties is limited at the minute...

Anyone done the route care to help me choose between the 29+ Krampus or the Vaya? I remember early posts of Markus' stating that this was strictly for MTBs but seem to recall a fair few riders on the actual event back in the mid-summer were on cross/gravel/adventure bikes like the Vaya...certainly the bit down to the Lammermuirs from Edinburgh is easily do-able on the vaya and I can make much quicker progress on it...

So what's the consensus?

First half would be ok on a rigid 29er (possibly a vaya), but the second half i'd definitely go with the krampus. Most people were on at least 29+ front and a lot of people were full 29+. I did it on my rigid 29er singlespeed and was very beaten up by the end of it, good route though! Gears are definitely recommended. :-bd

Vaya should be fine for that section. Only tougher bit might be the short section after Longyster climbing into the Lammermuirs.
Yes, do take your gears
