Cuben Carbon Windshield.

In my never ending quest to avoid doing anything productive, my mind got thinking about windshields (like it does) and in particular, internal air volume. I know from previous highly technical experiments that the larger the air volume inside a shield, the better a stove behaves ... it's a similar principle to that of a 'still airbox' on a motorbike / car.

Trouble is, although making a large volume 'box' is simple enough, it probably wouldn't lend itself very well to the lightweight, minimal world of bikepacking that we all know and love. Whatever it was made from needed to be as flexible as possible and I suppose as light as possible would be nice too.

2 brews worth of workshop time have resulted in a rough prototype of the Cuben - Carbon Windshield. I'm not convinced the dimensions are right yet and a greater degree of 'adjustability' for different stoves / pots needs adding but I think it might just work. This one comes in @ 7g and can obviously be folded up and stuffed wherever there's room.

You could replace the carbon with Alu. or Ti pegs and anchor it. Seems like it'd be so light, a farmer farting 2 mile away would blow it over and onto your flame.

It is anchored to the ground, the carbon supports have got little spikes on ... obviously, I couldn't push them into the worktop so used a little blue-tac instead Pushed into the ground, 'twould be very secure.

Hope you didn't light that and leave a burn mark on Dee's new worktop?

Thinking about the original 'problem' here could you make something like a big 'pocket stove' that slotted together but in flat pieces that could be put in a frame back/pannier (or could be rolled/curved slightly into a dry bag?).

I've had a lot of conversations recently about how unstable a lot of meths and gas stoves are, if the pieces provided a stable base as part of the 'box' then it might be worth the bulk/weight.

Your 'target market' for such a thing though might be kitchen sink cycle tourists though not uber-light bikepackers.

I think things like the 'Clik-stand' and the 'Trangia Triangle' already do this ... although using them, generally means using a stove that weighs nearly 150g I don't want to make stuff for the clumsy or inept, I'd rather they learnt how to use lightweight stuff properly
