At one with the World...well finding the right saddle

Post by Solo »

After messing around with 5 or 6 different saddles over the past year I returned to relatively cheap and cheerful Charge Spoon this week.

It was like putting on that old comfy shirt / jeans / whatever you find comfy.

There have been lighter, flashier and even better made saddles. But this felt 'right' from pedal stroke number 1.

Lesson learnt. Breaking a saddle isn't a reason to start trying new ones. Just replace!

Oh and it so happened the one I bought looks great too (Ltd edition) so can't even complain there either.

Happy man!! :-bd

I like Spoons but I find the foam "packs down" pretty quickly so they don't last too long. For the money though, still not bad.

The 143mm Specialized Toupe saddles are a very similar shape/size.

It's funny ... you see lots of spoons out there and for a few years I happily plonked my arse on one, until someone forgot their bike when attending the WRT so I lent them mine for the weekend. Upon its return I adjusted the saddle back to its usual position but couldn't ride on it for more than an hour. More adjusting, more riding, more adjusting but the problem remained.

I assumed the heavier rider had somehow altered / distorted the saddle, so I got another but the problem remained ... see, funny

I never got on with the Spoon, but WTB Rocket V's have always felt pretty much like home to me. Well, as much 'home' as something in close contact with your nethers for several hours at a time can...

I had a spoon and it gave me pain in the nether regions after a couple of hours. Changing to a narrower WTB volt sorted me out.

My son likes the Volt. I've never felt right on it.

I did try a Rocket V a few years ago but broke it after 2 rides. I'm light and they were towpath rides too!
The replacement was a Spoon then ironically enough.

I find manufacturers try to upsell you to a higher end seat in the promise of a comfy bum, but everyone's different and sometimes its not about quality, but fit

I found the cheap Btwin seat on my old bike much comfier than the one on my higher spec bike, as the cheaper padding actually moulded in after 200 miles

I'm lucky that I never get saddle sores or problems with my sit bones even after many many miles, maybe I've toughened up from my carbon road seat, however after 5hours plus in the saddle I suffer from terrible numbness, more so from my poor circulation in general, I'm thinking a seat with a cutout or depression might solve this?

Was happy with fizik tundra for yonks, then it started giving me grief and now I'm happy with the Gobi. (Although I'm experimenting on the road with the "road" equivalent at the moment). Which shorts/bike you're using makes a difference too I found.

Love my Fizik Aliante for 2-3 hour rides, but for the longer stuff, SDG Bel Air FTW.

I'm on a Madison flux, which is a charge spoon with a slightly tougher covering

Mind you, I seem to find most of the saddles I have quite comfortable, but I rarely spend more than a couple of hours in the saddle in one go

Charge Spoon and its various mates have been good to me on the mtb, but currently running a Fizik Gobi and getting on well with it. As for the road machines, well the spoon was just agony, spent a long time looking for replacements and alternatives and finally settled on the relief channel versions of Fizik's Arione. Seems the different positions mean that what works on one doesn't work for the other.

Fair point about road bikes. I have an Aliante on mine. Lovely saddle.

Charge spoon is my singlespeed saddle of choice. It encourages me out of the saddle. Hateful thing.

Tried all sorts from cheap to expensive over the space of 3 years, I have a particular sesitive shape due to injury :???:
The only one that really worked for me was the Brooks Cambium (had to be the most expensive didnt it!) Now have them on both my bikes
