Feed bags / Stem Cells

Post by ootini »

Hi all,

Quick question, am I correct in thinking most feed bags such as the Alpkit stem cells are connect only via the two velcro straps? One around bars / stem, one around risers on the headset? If so, how do you stop them flapping around as you ride?

Thanks

If you have a bag on the handlebars they lean against that.
Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

But otherwise they're free to swing etc using just the two attachment points I mentioned above? Seems like some kind of strap or elastic between the bottom of the feedbag and the fork crown might be useful?

This is what the original feed bags had. You can add a piece of shockcord or whatever to the bottom loops of the Alpkit bags very easily ... although some people may argue there's no need as your knees banging into them, generally stops them swinging about

I made a bunch of feedbags and put a couple of tabs at the bottom for fork-attaching. Seemed like a good idea while in front of the machine, haven't really notice it make much of a difference either way when riding the bike though...!

The ones I made myself attach to each other by Velcro around the stem, held secure by making screw holes where my computer mounts.
They're then threaded onto part of my bar harness to stop my bars getting cluttered with too much Velcro

Mine are very snug against the front harness and have little to no bop when riding, not enough to annoy me anyway.

I need to remember to add a drainage grommet though, last trip I found out cordura is quite waterproof and that can work both ways sometimes....

I only ask as I'm in the middle of a MYOG project using a £1.99 PoundStretcher washing line peg bag.

Given a blank canvas, which would you guys consider to be the best anchor points? So far I'm thinking a horizontal strap on the handle bar, a horizontal strap over the stem, and then a vertical strap below this around the risers (not sure what this bit of the steering assembly is called). So three in total, basically front, side and bottom to stabilize it. I had a test fit last night and it all seems fine, but when theres weight in it, it kinda sags down and forwards. As mentioned previously a bag on the bars may stop this.

This is the bag I'm using as a base:

Revelate feed bags have a qr buckled strap which loops round your fork crown or bar harness and keeps them nice and stable.

I found that an Alpkit stem cell attached to stem and bars didn't really flap around much. The fixing points are fairly central top to bottom.

If it's flapping about there's not enough cake in there to weigh it down, add more cake.
(This solution can be applied to most of life's woes)

iirc, the stem cell was made slightly larger a while back to fit their myti-mug (the 650ml size?) Anyway that's a bit smaller than the brupot so I don't think you really will be be able to fit it in... The specs off the alpkit site are
Weight: 222 g
Diameter: 12.7 cm
Height: 13.7 cm
Capacity: 1000 ml

Which may help you find a bag that fits it in. Alpkit make all theirs so Im sure if you asked they could make an extra big stem cell for you - I would be worried about it hitting off your knees though, hanging off that bit of the bike. Maybe in the seat pack? My old mKettle has a bag with loops to hang it in the triangle, but if you have a frame bag then that's out. Good luck!
