Just that 10s road and MTB weren't x-compatible, so I'd be suprised if 11s was. I've not tried it yet, was told it was a different ratio. -----cks to 11 speed : ) and because of that, the same to hydro STIs on off-road bikes. Bar-end shifters are great. Liberating, even : )

IanF's right as far as I know re gearing. Road 11s freehubs are 1.65mm wider than standard 8-9-10s, so an 11s MTB cass on a road 11s freehub needs a washer.

Yes, bar end shifters is a possibility. I could run TRP Hylex brakes, though Greg says they're not as good

No-one makes hydro brakes as good as Shimano but the Hylex's are very good ime, really nice modulation and loads of power. Not qite as slickly put together as 685 hydros but still a great brake. The longer hoods are either weird or a bit like Jones bars. adding some range to the grips positions. I like them. There's a Di2 button area in the hood too. When XT D12 RDs are out at a resonable price (ha..) it would be a great 1x11 CX set up.

Interestingly I think 11speed road shifters could possibly be persuaded to mate up with a 10 speed Mtb mech with a carefully bodged adaptor. You should get 10 speeds, you might even be able to push it to 11 as the sprocket spacing stays the same (need a one up rad cage for the big sprockets) but that would really be pushing it.

It's something I've been meaning to try and work out for a while, just haven't found the time!

I really like the TRP Hylex on my arkose 2, but it's used as a comfy commuter and do it all bike more than an off road bike. Hard to compare to normal brakes as flat bar hydro brakes (XT for me) feel so different, and for me more natural

So, I could go TRP Hylex, Sram 11sp MTB 10/42 cassette with a clutch mech and shifter. Single ring up front. That would work, wouldn't it?

The freehub body is, yes. Not the actual spacing between gears. The MTB 11s cassette has a larger low sprocket so it has a dished design to add the overall cassette width it needs but the smaller road sprockets can't do that so they had to add freehub width. The wider road 11s cassette will fit onto a MTB hub but the smallest sprocket may sit too close to the frame for the mech to drop onto that gear easily (space the mech with a washer if so) and the lockring will only engage a turn or 2. If you can use an 11-32 11s SRAM cassette on an MTB hub and road gearing it'd all be ok.
The MTB hub could have slightly better spoke angles also - road 11s disc hubs are getting a bit sqeezed there.

One of a number of issues with flared drops but I'd risk getting all opinionated about a very personal thing there : ) One thing I like about Hylex and 685 brakes is that the control from the hoods is so much better that it makes one of the strongest arguments for flare-drops less applicable, especially with H-bars as an option if the grip angle is another reason for them.

Are you planning on riding the 3 Peaks race on that bike (lovely btw). If so I would think about using classic drops as they can be very picky indeed on what is/isn't allowed. I rode Mary bars when I did it and was apparently lucky not to be DQ'd.
