Re: GPS Gobbledygook
i don't seem to have an option called 'track manager' on the main menu.
there're just 'tracks'.
are we talking the same model (eTrex Legend HcX)?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
I didn'tcreate a gpx folder either. In the track menu you should see your route and then you should be able to click the "show on map" button.

ok, here's my main menu screen:

here's the 'tracks' screen:

here's the file browser on the pc:

so.....you can see that the file is on the device and yet not showing on the 'tracks' list (and that there's no 'track manager' option).
any thoughts....?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Did you save it to the device as a gpx track or route? It's deffo on the card so must be in one of the menus.

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
i didn't know that there was a difference between a .gpx track and a .gpx route but either way it's in neither menu???
:?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Sorry Gairy, mine is an Etrex30 and 'Track Manager' is indeed your 'Tracks'.
Routes use specific waypoints with turn directions, tracks are simply a line you follow. In Garmin terms they are quite different and when you save a gpx file off say bikehike it will ask you to select the correct file option.
There are quite a few more files in your .gpx folder than there are in your Tracks screen?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
I'm a bit stumped. Did you use bikehike? I find that's the easiest way as it uses the Garmin communicator to send directly to the device via usb cable. If you download to the device as a gpx track it should appear in the track menu.
I would say delete the gpx folder and just have the garmin one with the gmapp.img (map tile) in there in case your folder is causing conflicts and then try it again via bikehike (you can import your route into bikehike as a gpx first). Make sure it has less than 500 trackpoints in the options tab and reduce if necessary before transfer.
I have the same unit as you and that is exactly how I normally do it.

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Gairy im not sure what your after, but looking at the screenshots your tracks are in the file browser, the date format is just different. There are several other tracks there also but these are likely to be from when your just turning the device on/off etc.
I mapped several national parks in Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal using a handheld mapping GPS and pushed data back to South Africa via a BGAN satellite unit daily. To make things easier we just turned it on in the morning and off in the evening, this saved us having multiple files to send. It was a PITA but Garmin's date format is great as you can find the files you want very quickly. This doesn't help you much but does explain all the other files which have saved automatically.

i'm not after anything complicated.griffdowg wrote:Gairy im not sure what your after.....
all i want to do is to be able to upload a route and then ride that route using the gps device to tell me where to go.
i realise that there's a difference between 'tracks' and 'routes' but at the minute i can't make either work.
i'm not a techno-fool but i just can't get the damn thing to do what it's supposed to do!

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
He's only gone and done it!!!!!
It involved a reset of the whole thing and then making sure I only add new 'tracks' via MapSource.
IT WORKS!
I've yet to follow a track I've uploaded (and still don't know how to convert a 'track' into a 'route') but I finally feel like I've turned a corner and might, one day, given enough help and counselling, be able to use some of the more basic features of this weird little gadget to help me navigate whilst out riding.
Thanks to everyone who's helped for your patience and assistance - I owe everyone a pint (note: 1 between you all - not 1 each).
Cheers, Gairy.

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Finally installed the mini SD card in an Etrx 20 (I sent an Etrex cx back as my Mac wouldn't recognise it) - it doesn't show in the Etrex 20 - any suggestions?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Which mini sd card Steve ... unless it's a genuine Garmin one it won't work, I've been there with that :?
May the bridges you burn light your way
Re: GPS Gobbledygook
er.. SanDisk mini SD seems to work fine in my Etrex 20.
(though with Win. only the onboard memory shows as a separate folder when you attach the GPSthe & fires up in a window - If I need to see the card I go through the control panel. The card does show up in Basecamp though..)

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Correction. Sorry & so as not to cause any more confusion;
When my etrex is plugged in to the PC it (the PC) 'sees' the SD card NOT the onboard memory. (That I get to through control panel/administrative tools/disk management)

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
A couple of observations that may help;
The etrex can be set in 2 'modes' for connecting to another device;
1) USB/mass storage (menu/system/USB mode mass storage). Set like this it seems Basemap (and Windows) treats it like any other storage device so you see (and can drag & drop files to) the main memory & SD card.
2) 'Garmin' (menu/system/GARMIN). When it's plugged in in this mode, Basemap acts a bit like a 'remote' manager - you can't see separate folders so no drag & drop etc, but you can see (and edit/delete) 'tracks' that are on the main memory just as if you are doing it on the device.
This can be quite useful because if you've got the etrex 20 set to 'USB/mass storage' and use Basemap to 'delete tracks' it only (I think) removes them from the Basemap library on the PC, the actual data is still sitting on the GPS!
.. has caused me no end of confusion that.. :?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Roy, to confirm; you have got Dan's osm card to work in an Etrex20?
Would you mind/be able to do an idiots guide how to?

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Ahh, no sorry not 'Dan's'. Missed that link in the conversation..
That said, I have got the UK OSM map from TalkyToaster; http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps-previous.htm and that works fine from either the card or onboard memory

Re: GPS Gobbledygook
Idiots guide for that was, as best as this idiot can remember (I did an awful lot of faffing around in advance of getting an OSM map that would download), to simply drag the file onto both the 'GPX' folder in the 'Garmin' directory on the GPS & then, having created a 'GPX' folder on the memory card, put a copy there. (Still not entirely sure which of the two the GPS is reading, but as it's now working, thought best to leave well alone)
With that done, go to setup/maps on the GPS and the map 'should' be selectable (not got the GPS to hand right now so can't confirm exact route to that but it's fairly straightforward).
One thing that threw me was getting the 'contours' to work - at first I thought they weren't because I couldn't see any... then remembered I'm in Norfolk
If it's still not working for you PM me after about 20:00 today & I'll have a good look at my setup..
