Snapped Anything Cage ... again.

Well, here's a picture of one of my Anything cages, the other one has also developed cracks but hasn't actually split yet :( This is the second pair I've seen go ... anyone else suffered the same fate? I wouldn't say they've been overloaded or even overtightened, I think it's just a weak point ... I suppose, thin aluminium + vibration = cracking!

Most aluminium bottle cages I have had experience with are all welded down at least 2" of bracket, those are just tiny little 3mm tabs?

I know you need to wrap straps through, but there appears plenty of space to be able to do that elsewhere on the cage.

griffdowg they don't actually snap at the weld, I'm sure a TIG and a couple of bits af alloy sheet could see them sorted. The other pair that snapped came through Charlie the Bikemonger who swapped them straight away and was superb ... mine however, were sourced from the US before they were avaliable over here. They had to be ordered, then sent to someone in the States before they posted them to me :? so quite where that leaves me I've no idea.

Hmmm not great design if they are only welded on the little tabs. I would have expected several inches of weld down there!

A better solution might have been to have the arms / wings hinged to enable different sized loads (and getting rid of those tiny welds)

Is this not the reason that we've collectively moved away from carrying gear on racks in recent years. I wonder where most regular racks fail (must vary from make to make obviously); there must be a common theme though - is it near the frame/rack attachment point? or where the load is suspended (in the case of panniers).
As a matter of interest Stu what kind of weights have you been putting in those (not big bottles of water?)

If thats not the weld how are they attached? :?

Salsa should honour it as its clearly a manufacturers defect. Worth an email to them in the states.

I've not used mine yet, but it might be better to not run the straps around the outside of the cage (and in the process stress the welds by pulling the cage inwards) but rather just around the item being carried and use the cage to just provide some support and containment.

Tend to keep shelter in one side and cooking kit in the other. I'd guess maybe 2-3lb in each as an absolute maximum.

I stopped using the straps a while ago and made some bungees up instead. The bungees stretch before they put any real compression force on the outer of the cage.

I can honestly say I have never had a pannier rack snap and I have given them a lot of abuse over the years - I thought the main difference with bike packing was carrying less and distributing the weight better - I can see that would be better, even though I have got used to a heavier back end - that some say wobbles too much (yes I am still talking bags!)

The two racks ive used recently are by Topeak and axiom - not mega expensive but they havent cracked - surprised salsa seem to have made their anything cages like cheap bottle cages they definitely need feedback on that one

Well my faith has been restored. I received a reply from Salsa suggesting that I contact Ison ( the Salsa distributor) and see if they could help. An email was duly sent explaining my plight (remember I didn't buy these cages from the UK) and later that day I received a rather nice email back telling me that Ison had spoken to Salsa and if I returned the cages then a new pair would be sent out to me. :D

So that's a big thumbs up to both Salsa and Ison I reckon ... neither was really obliged to help me out given the circumstances. Salsa have asked that everyone be reminded that Anything cages are only designed to carry 4lb MAXIMUM

I have a brand new pair of cages still in the packets and there is nothing on the packaging about weight limits etc.

To be honest 4lb is quite a lot of weight to get on a cage ... I don't think I've ever had anything like that on them, even when they appear heavily loaded.
