New windshield.
New windshield for Brother Smith ... 8g stove derivative and Ruta Locura 450ml Ti mug. Shield's a similar shape to the template supplied with 8g stoves but with a few tweaks.

Re: New windshield.
Can you show the pack size?
The only thing that has stopped me from getting an 8g is stability on uneven ground, does this help at all?

Re: New windshield.
It rolls up and fits inside any 450ml mug ... Myticup, Snow Peak 450, Life Venture, etc.Can you show the pack size?
The shield above is a snug fit around the mug, so the mug's supported by the stove and the shield, so it's very stable. The 8g comes with a template to make a tapered shield which makes it more stable / efficient, however hardly anyone bothers to make one and lots of folk use them with bigger pots anywayThe only thing that has stopped me from getting an 8g is stability on uneven ground, does this help at all?

Hmmm, this sounds all very temptings8tannorm wrote: The shield above is a snug fit around the mug, so the mug's supported by the stove and the shield, so it's very stable.

Re: New windshield.
Interesting, I like it
What are the tweaks to make this different to the template one?
Also, have you made any tweaked stoves to use and esbit?
I take esbit as back up and my current set up lets me use either. It's a pocket stove ti with a Vaseline meths/esbit stove and foil windshield. But I rarely use the wood aspect and the meths stove isn't massively efficient

The walls on this one are slightly steeper. What are the tweaks to make this different to the template one?
I have, one way up it's a meths stove and flip it over and it's esbit. However, it wouldn't be any good with this shield as the stove is too high for it. It could probably be made to work with a bigger pot where the shield could be taller and still fit inside for storage. Also, have you made any tweaked stoves to use and esbit?

Re: New windshield.
I'm using a snow peak 450- no way of getting a windshield big enough and still fit in the cup then?
I love that cup so don't want to stop using it!
is there an optimum esbit height? Wonder if I could use the Vaseline tin tray for esbit from my current set up. More to lose though...

Re: New windshield.
Not if you want to use the same stove to burn esbit and meths. Actually, as I'm typing, I've just thought that maybe a 2 piece shield might work ... potentially it could give you twice the height and still be stored in the mug.no way of getting a windshield big enough and still fit in the cup then?
Roughly 30mm but it alters a little depending on a few things ... but 30mm is a good starting point.is there an optimum esbit height?

Re: New windshield.
Does the esbit holder on the 8g stove have a pot stand built in?
Got any pics by any chance?
I have a feeling that an unnecessary purchase is coming up...!

Re: New windshield.
Possibly not mass production because they're fiddly but I think I will make them available.are they going into mass-production Stu?
Yeah sort of. The stove has 'legs' which when upside down / in esbit mode act as pot supports.Does the esbit holder on the 8g stove have a pot stand built in?
I did think of a way (while trying to get to sleep) to allow the set-up like in the pic to work with both meths and esbit ... just need to try it and make sure my half asleep thinking is correct

Re: New windshield.
Let me know when it becomes viable!
Esbit isn't a deal breaker, but it's a neat, stable and reliable way of carrying fuel around

Re: New windshield.
Actually Ben, last nights thinking was okay ... a standard 8g stove can be turned upside down and used as an esbit stand. The addition of two stainless rods inserted through the top air vents act as mug supports and raise the mug 25mm - 30mm above the esbit. So, meths and solid fuel and all packable inside a standard 450ml mug

Re: New windshield.
What does the bottom of the 8g stove look like? Guessing it's not flat!
How much to make the set for a snow peak 450 inc postage?

Re: New windshield.
It's slightly concave, so the esbit would have somewhere to sit. What does the bottom of the 8g stove look like? Guessing it's not flat!
Leave it with me Ben ... just got to make a 'hard' pattern. How much to make the set for a snow peak 450 inc postage?

Awesomes. I'll stop derailing this thread then!
Re: New windshield.
I love my windshield (the same as this that Stu made for me)
It makes the 8g stove much more stable to use.
The stove continues to burn efficiently, but what I like about it is that more heat is transferred to the water in the cup (compared to my previous feeble attempt)
