Helmet Q

Post by LSJ »

I'm a bit confused at the moment...

Coming from a cycling culture where it's the norm to wear a helmet, both as a kid and adult, and especieally in the fitness community (Road, CX, MTB), I'm having a question.
In the older days (5 years ago), there were two types of helmets. Road and MTB. Now it seems that the MTB have "branched" out. You can still get the "normal" lid for MTB, but seeing more and more of the back country style helmets (example Giro XAR vs Giro Fathom). Have the old type of MTB lid.... What is the prefferred type for people here in this forum, and why trail/backcountry specific helmets? Am I missing something here, what is the advantage the trail helmets?

(in other words looking for the excuse to solve the equation X-1, where X is the bike equipment I already have  )

Duro innit

The 'trail' style of helmets usually offer a bit more coverage at the sides and down the back of your head. However, I find them generally warmer and heavier than other styles. It's not unusual to see road style helmets (worn with cycling cap, obviously) adorning the heads of many a bikepacker.

I'm really liking my Urge Supacross helmet at the moment. I'm not sure many people like the styling but it's very light, very comfy and you can't see it when it's on your head :-bd

Whilst I have a MTB helmet, I usually use a road helmet which is lighter for bikepacking.

I don't think there is a right or a wrong answer, as long as your helmet is comfortable to wear.

Agreed... I was just wondering if it was the latest trend, or I really missed some very important thing. My own thoughts were in the line of ...Heavy(ish), hotter, a tad more protection. So unless otherwise enlightened, I'll mark this down as fashion/coolness gimmick. But thats an important part of bikng too

I like the peak/visor bit on a mtb type helmet - keeps the worst of the rain off my specs... :geek:

Nothing says cool like a mudspattered grin peaking from under the brim of a classic cycling cap.

I just wear what is comfortable which is a taaaaallll order.

I've only just acquired a second helmet, which is solely for mtb use

Previously had one for everything

Second one was cheap and means I can have an off road helmet light for mtb use, and a road light on my helmet for commuting
