Dazzler uk maps always on ioffer?

Post by Ray Young »

So my Garmin etrex 20 arrived today and I already have a UK topo map to fit but I want an OS 1/50k UK map. I can't see one on ioffer from dazzler. Does he not always have them in stock?

Give me a shout if you can't work something out. I have the 20 and the same dodgy maps.

Works very well when you set the map display correctly. Sometimes slow to load the next square with that add on. Battery life is great with rechargeables.

Thanks, i'll bear that in mind. Pushbikemike has also offered help. Still waiting for the map card to arrive. What do you mean by set the map display correctly?

I had a problem when I first used the card that everything change in map view (zoom, scroll...) took an age. After some research I found that in the map setup menu you can enable/disable multiple maps. After disabling all but the OS 1:50 it started to worked much quicker.

Also for biking I find the setting that always puts you at the bottom centre of the screen with the track 'in front' works much better than having north up.

Not that you need it now, but I scratched my GPS screen. I found applying clear nail varnish was a miracle cure. Also good for stanchion scratches so worth the 99p investment.

Stick on screen protectors can be had for pennies. I bought six and will replace when they get cloudy from muddy finger tips!

hi, (apologies for the hijack) do you know would these maps be compatible with viewranger on android or do I need to buy another map (from dazzler)?
need a cheap map to use offline and would like the option of purchasing all of GB map at once..
used Viewranger yesterday and it drained my battery in no time as had to download info every few minutes. also don't think I'd be online when doing the BB200.. also would 1:50:000 ber ok for BB200? thx.

Should be fine.

I can't imagine the iOffer maps will work with a phone as they're supplied on a micro sd card? (but I know nowt about this so could be very wrong)

You can buy OS mapping to use off-line for apple stuff so it might be available for Android. My Touch has all of Wales at 1:50k on it, recall it was about £12 via iTunes.

Almost definitely will not work on anything but a Garmin device or map s/w. The ioffer SD cards have the maps in Garmin IMG format which is proprietary and looks like a mini-filesystem. You'll have to reverse engineer this into whatever Viewranger uses which I think is a tile cache of lots of map tiles stitched together.

You will likely need mapping of some kind for the whole route. For normal folk this will be between 20 and 30 hours. The device will also have to be Wales-proof (water resistant). So a general warning for all is that a phone might make a first choice of a primary GPS.

A regular garmin will last at least a day with good batteries with the screen on permanently. Even good phones with the GPS and screen on would require at least one battery changes for the BB200 even if in airplane mode.

However, as a backup it makes great sense. I'd be interested in offline Android map options too for that reason.

I did use a Sony xperia phone with viewranger for a while. I took a spare battery, used it in aeroplane mode, only switched it on when I needed to check the route and only ever used the GPS when I was unsure of my position. Two batteries would last over four days like this but not a convenient way to navigate. Damp conditions as mentioned are a problem and I found heavy cloud cover stopped the GPS finding it's location on two occasions.

Back country navigator for Android :-bd

About £7 and allows you to locally download as much OS mapping as you want. I have popular areas downloaded as cached files (eg Wales, East Anglia, etc) so no signal needed, or you can use it so it downloads as you go.

It also does gpx tracks, route recording, etc. I'm tempted to try out a motorola moto e (£50 from virgin mobile ) with a glued on adaptor to make it fit a garmin mount.

UK maps on iOS is similar but didn't do routes when I last used it.

Thanks for all the advice.

have decided that for the moment I don't need an expensive garmin... though the dakota 200's are about 100 on fleabay...
my samsung s5 is waterproof (apparently) and is wearing an otterbox defender case which doubles as a nifty DIY Bike mount with the otherwise ridiculous belt clip. the S5 is actually too big for virtually every trouser pocket I have with that defender case. It is enormous!!

viewranger was downloading data (maps) and murdered my battery by using mobile data constantly) on a trial yesterday so def need to use the phone in offline or airplane mode.
did try strava's app which works perfectly in airplane mode but it is catastrophic for offroad cycling. def do not bother with that one until they update for proper offroad use. it will autoroute you everywhere except where you want to be.

so am def interested in trying backcountry navigator offline locally on a 10 hr trip as a shakedown. is only £7.99 at the mo so if it has the maps as well for no extra charge, i'm in. I have a gomadic battery charging pack (for the bento box) as well so will try using a flat phone battery also to see how long it takes to juice up a phone while working hard.

hopefully it won't result in being a convoluted way to kill an expensive phone...

I found when using my dynamo to charge a flat back up battery, that was in turn charging an S4 at 30% the phone soon conked out. Starting with back-up & phone at 100% meant I returned with 100% on the phone after 100 miles of strava use.
