fix it on bike

Post by Cat »

Hi! So I've bought the borah bivy, integral designs tarp and the exped up 7 mat... and realised that fishing wire won't fix this lot onto the bike. What hv u found to be the lightest way to fix it on with? (Alpkit hv run out) Oh and I need string and pegs for the tarp and I want it all to be lighter than a feather!

I hv a small giant reign2 full suss so no real room on the frame... I'm 5'2 and generally carrying it all on my back isn't the best solution me thinks: ~)

take a look at Wildcat Designs for bags to carry stuff on your bike, there are others out there as well that do similar

cuben fiber is probably the lightest strongest stuff out there buts its very expensive and difficult to work with, not sure if anyone does actually make bike bags with cuben on a commercial basis but I know of a few people who have made their own with cuben for ultra lightness

Oh dear ... the bug's bitten already

There's not much (if anything) that's lighter out there.
May the bridges you burn light your way

If you want uberlite you just want to strap some drybags to your bars and seat.

Go back to Alpkit and get one of their Airlok Xtra Dual dry bags and use the straps it comes with to fix it to your bars. The Dual version has openings at both ends that make packing it easier. Then get a smaller Airlol Xtra for the seat. This has only one opening which will be all you need at that end. You can get lighter dry bags to do this, but the Airlok ones are very tough and less likely to get holes worn in them.

I did all this when I first kicked off losing weight on the bike, but quickly realised that stability and usability were far more important than outright weight, so ended up with the Wildcat bar and seat harness. They're brilliant.
I'm just going outside ...

:-bd that's great advice thank you. I hear you about lightweight and stability. So far my tarp, bivy, mat, down jacket, sleepingbag, poles and stove (without meths) weigh 1.96k. No food or clothes or worse still I will need lighter (yet strong) tools etc! The bug hasn't bitten, it has consumed! !! Help! !!

Hi Cat,
I'm same height as you and use Wildcatgear. I'm a wee bit of an addict. I even have the latest product, the Lioness. Check it out.

That's great thank you. I spent far too many hours on the internet last night and ended up dreaming about it! I think I'm going to get the wildcat stuff and maybe mix it up with the Alpkit koala on the back...
