Road tour tyre choice

Post by jpw247 »

Planning on some road touring soon but only ever done mtb stuff. I plan on using a cx bike fully loaded with a weekends worth. Would you guys use slicks or xc tyres.

Definitely slicks. These would be a good choice http://road.cc/content/review/117460-ch ... 30mm-tyres,
or Continental GP 4 seasons or whatever they are called for a light-weight, more chance of a puncture
or something from Schwalbe for heavier, more bombproof, less chance of a puncture.

EDIT: All seasons -> meant 4 seasons.

I've used Conti GP4Seasons and got on well with them. When they wore out I switched to Schwalbe Marathons (both 28mm). The Marathons are definitely more robust and have a bit more tread (I've had them on forest tracks etc OK) but are heavier and definitely take a bit more effort. I believe Conti have a new 28c touring tyre out and I'll be taking a close look at that soon.

Big thanks you guys. I can understand the merits of both but I always appreciate an experienced opinion. Slicks it is!

I ride a CX bike as a road bike and tourer, I've had Continental Vectran 4 Seasons tyres on it, they've done 3500 miles, still in great shape. Had 3 punctures in all that time, one of them was today, bit of flint.
