Against the Elements - another video from the WC2C

Post by Ian »

I thought that I'd put this in its own thread as it has a different title
Here's my cut of the wet Wales Coast to Coast trip from a couple weeks ago with Composite, Chicken legs, Alpinum and me.

Image

Tried some different things in this one, namely fiddling with the levels to alter colour, tone etc, but also tried to create sequences that go with the various phases present in the music track. Enjoy

That's great, makes me feel a little guilty of having my GP sitting in a case doing nothing
Looks like it was quite a trip.

Great video Ian and Composite. Makes riding in the rain seem like fun.

Thanks for the comments. Decided to use some "electronic music" after Stu's comment about iTunes having a special genre for Bikepacking videos... Quite pleased with the music for this one, and like the music Neil chose for his too.

Filming it was easier than editing I think. Took me a good few hours to edit it all from start to finish. Takes ages to sort through all the footage. However, while reviewing the footage for this one (approx 48 mins of it) I was tempted to pull all the little bits of walking/ riding to and fro to the camera for different cuts and put it into a little piece of its own. Some of it was quite comedy

A "few" hours... I wish. I don't have 2 kids though, which is how I find the time Steve. I also had the benifit of a week and half off work and bugger all to do as my knee was borked so couldn't go riding.
I think I got into double figures, 10-11 hours I reckon to get my version done. I was doing a lot of transcoding of footage though and the colour grading stuff takes a long time tweaking every clip and rendering down.

Anyway good work Ian, like the changes you made from the "screening version".
I really like that track mate, it's an inspired choice IMO.

Cheers Neil. I did say a "good few hours"... I guess I spent about 9 hours on it in all. Two long evenings after the kids went to bed and and an hour the other morning with some final tweaks. It's fun though once you get into it :)

Nice film Ian. Like Alt-J for your choice of music.

Great stuff Ian.
Really enjoyed that and like the documentary aspect of it very much.

The music does cut it well, despite it not being Beirut ;-)

But I’m afraid you haven’t stuck to these rules:

We need to repeat the trip ;-)

Seeing your and Neil’s great work also makes me realise just how much worth other footage than such limited to the riders POV is.

Interesting to see that there seemed to be crucial moments and footage that both of you applied independently.

Ha, I did look at Beirut tracks, but in the end I thought something slightly quicker paced suited the flow better. You'll have to ride slower next time if you want me to use any Beirut ;)

I did actually watch Neil's film in the end, after I reviewed the footage. I had a good idea of which bits I wanted to use and was surprised to see some of these absent from Neil's edit. I think some of that stems from the differences between the music tracks, and in 3:30 you can't include everything. Quite a lot of the POV stuff was too poor to use with water on the lens - usually the first 5s of a clip after I wiped the lens was ok, but it then got progressively worse so it was good to get the off bike stuff to mix in.

As an exercise overall, it worked very well having two cameras and us both taking footage of the trip as we saw fit at the time.

My girlfriend thought it funny to see the small gear's I often was in. She does have a good point in that.

Of course the trick is to run on high cadence in videos to make it look faster

I got really panicky when I thought you'd left the Camera in Penros Isaf!
