MBA - Anyone a member?

I joined the Mountain Bothy Association last week.

I'm happy to be just showing my little bit of support but as an aside, do you normally get a list of the bothies or a news letter or anything?

Newsletter every quarter which is usually a good read. There talk of it going online to save the printing cost to allow more to be spent on the bothies themselves.

The bothies are on the website so probably don't need to be in a booklet as well.

I joined last year to show a bit of support for places I occasionally visit.

I think this is what had me wondering. I was trying to remember the locations of ones I'd seen on the highland trail race, and find a way of documenting where they and any other I could find all are.
Basically trying to plan a bit of exploring but enabling staying in bothies.

You can download the KML, which can then be opened in google earth and converted into all sorts of file formats

At the top of the list on the left hand side, there's a hyperlink that says "kml". Click that and it'll download like any other files.

In terms of conversion. loads of online converters, search "kml to gpx converter" or whatever you're after into google.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you're probs best just using that google maps link.

:? That list was never supposed to be plastered all over the interweb.........
No issues with it being out there, but if we could try and contain it within these 4 walls. Wary these special places could come to harm if they are easier to find.

If anyone finds any others or has condition reports/pics let me know

I would love a location/list of non-mba bothies, to plan some routes and things. But if its 'confidential' don't worry about it... :)

The MBA is pretty good to join - it used to be that you couldn't see the bothy locations without a password, but they dropped that now.

There's a semi-non-official forum http://ukbothies.freeforums.org/index.php where a lot of Maintenance Officers are on, and informative discussions about who's turn it is to empty the loo's at Corrour...

I realize that I'm late to the party here but I have a question. The locations are on the web page now but they're in Grid Reference. I've been trying to figure out how to convert the British Grid Reference system to any of the other formats but can't find a good converter. Oddly, I've found one that goes the other direction though. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Michael

You could use wheres the path

click binoculars
enter GR
hit search
drop pin
rinse repeat

If you then save the route as a GPX you can open the file in notepad and it will tell you the lat/lons.

You can find them on streetmap.co.uk and then get all the various co-ordinates / locations / postcode*. I forget the buttons but it's not exactly hidden.
