The Ramadhan/Fasting Files

Post by redefined_cycles »

Just thought I’d share my silly fasting (unless I’m riding in the late evening) riding attempts. I’ve self elected to attempt 200 miles on the mtb  as some sort of training for the Dales Divide for which I doubt I’m currently ready.

So, here goes… Though I was supposed to start more or less on day one of fasting to regulate the miles and not hurt myself. Last Saturday was a little busy and it’s never a good idea to start exercise on day one of fasting (past experience and guesstimate) and not do I plan to ruin my fasting journey.

On top of that my dads been unwell and works been needed to be fulfilled too. So the bike had been sat waiting patiently for the week. Then yesterday I got the chance to brush it off and ride home from my dads.

Ride 1 - Hudds to Dewsbury via the Castle Hill.

I didn’t climb the steep way to Castle Hill but going around the backroads and paths I suppose the elevation was the same. Last bit of gnarl which I wasn’t sure I’d have to dab on (it’s in the Peaks100 but going downhill after coming around past Castle Hill Huddersfield), I actually managed to clear. Though the heart rate monitor wasn’t on I knew I needed to rest a bit to allow fasting-safety.

So a dab at the top of the trail before getting to Castle Hill Proper. Then around and on the fun trails behind CH. Down the steep hill towards Wakefield Road and then up the slimy trails and down. A bit more road where I tested the iphones panoramic abilities and down my Everesting path trail. Careful as to not lose any teeth (as well as a chunk of the rear mech cage missing - of which I imagine the chain popping out won’t be really pleasant an experience).

12 miles under the belt, made it for Juma after a shower and no issues to the fasting (no water either).

Pics in reverse order of the ride (generally)…

Gnarly bit just cleared, chance to take the pic whilst heart rate gets under check! Alhamdulillah, it didn’t pop.

Another ride, this time undulating but again to my mums. Up my Wveresting climb I got a little excited as I was clearing it mostly. When I finally dabbed the HR was up at 178!! At the top of the climb the heart started hurting and I could’ve kicked myself.

More careful after that and by the time I reached Castle Hill (highest point in Huddersfield) I was about 700 calories in (though I’m pretty sure it said 1500 cals but I never managed to get the full pic of my screen).

Pics here somewhat https://imgur.com/gallery/pWcFMUJ

Another 18 miles done so just 170 to go. Message to self, not pressure. The pic of the steps is my steps of old that I last rode down about 10 years ago. Still managed it and with 29er wheels it’s even easier!

Edit, my Strava states 1700 calories total so it must’ve been 1500 calories used to get to that there Castle Hill.

Yeah, should’ve written that in the title Phil - don’t try this at home  20 + years experience and all that

But, point taken. Especially trying to clear them obstacles uphill that then give you a buzz at the clearance. I’ll adjust the main screen on the Wahoo to show HR and keep it below 150.

After a day or few resting and no riding, today I got my chance. From my dad’s, meant that Wessenden Head was a little closer to reach. That being one of the goals of one of my Ramadhan rides, but coordination is key as it’s still a long/rough way out.

Trying instead to at least get to the Outlane Golf Course track, but many (well, ok, the main one route) to it are/is 20% tough. So I avoided Dodlee Lane like the plague.

Image
I needed to get onto the blocked off canal tow path so opted for this little canal bridge.

Image
With the canal being blocked, I assume this very low water level is all linked. Hardly any traffic on the towpath thus this heron was hanging around freely. Never seen one around these ends in 40+ years.

Image
Then some of the old trails I’ve not visited in years. Ultimately fasting helping you stay closer to home with similar satisfaction levels. Heart well within limits so far.

Image
Now comes the first proper/scary climb of the day. Way back when this used to send the heart rate through the roof and a struggle staying on the back whilst balancing the centre of gravity on the first 16% section.

Not sure if it was my bike, or my fitness, but for some reason we made light work of it and even managed to do the switchback without much wobble!! Highly unusual, though maybe the fat fighters thread has something to play!

Image
Here’s that 20% cobbled Dodlee Lane but I’m now at the safe/top end of it. Just to give an example of how difficult it is, that car in the distance had its hazards on most of the way down. Not sure if it’s brake fade or just frightened of looking straight down what might be seeming like a cobbled cliff (slight exaggeration but you get my point).

Next stop, Outlane Golf Course. Would I have to dab due to fear of heart rate rising/heart ache (literally). Though I had been topping up the water since the night before and had been for a ‘mahaasive’ wee multiple times overnight and pre-ride.

Image
That’s where we are going, in the distance was an 18%(ish) gradient. But the worrying bit was at the bottom of the climb. Being a switchback with cobbles that seemed to have been laid with massive gaps apart. That is one of the first climbs I ever wondered if I’d ever one day be able to climb it.

Going down I asked the orange jacket workers if they’d come to ‘fix’ the (beautiful, rocky DH) trail. Thanksfully they were just looking down some sort of shaft or hole in the ground.

Image
This trail where I had my first ever proper mountain biking fall/fail. Years later my knee would always flare up when thinking about being here or actually coming. Not being fixed, phew Alhamdulillah.

Image
Then I cleared the aforementioned cobbled switchback (but obviously wasn’t in a state to be taking pics) but only made it this far before the washed out trail halted me. Heart rate well within safety limits (I reckon I hit about 167) so there’s definitely something unusually happening. Let’s just blame the bike!

Anyway, I went back and cleared this little wash-out and headed on up to the horses. Next up, that 18% which me and my mates would always have to psych ourselves up to get up. For some reason, again, the Highball made lightwork of it and the next rocky track switchback.

Here it is, Lower Gate (orange workers); Shaw Lane; Whin Gate and up to New Lane, where the trauma would usually end. But my heart was still beating smooth and I was feeling good. No risk of running my fast (aim of the game for me).

At this point it would have been easy enough to make a 5 mile section straight up towards Wessenden Head. But I felt that might be pushing it. 10 miles in my legs, I opted for some straightforward trails and then the long road back to my mums.

15 miles done making it a total of 45 miles. Just 155 miles to reach target, Wessenden still calling!

Bonus pic of my neck of the woods. So beautiful Alhamdulillah.

Scores on the doors. Last day of the month today and it being eid today/tomorrow, I thought an update is in order.

255 miles of mtb. Mainly commuting for super shorts shifts and 26000ft of uphill goodness. Lots of lumber explored and even bought myself a rip-saw for the felled tree we've been keeping int he back garden.

Only 2 or 3 ever so slight close calls where I either went up the hills too hard or hadn't drank enough water the night before the fasting. Worked well, happy with that mileage but being on the start line of the Dale's Divide is still a bit questionable due to developing work commitments.

Oh well :-bd Alhamdulillah.
