700x40c gravel tyre recommends

Been done before, but everyone likes a what tyre? thread...right?

My camino is now mainly road/light off-road focussed, because the 29er covers the rest. I've been running it with 40mm vittoria terreno dry's for 6 months plus, and although it's not seen many miles, it has seen many punctures. When they were working, they rode really well. I think it's partly because I inadvertently bought the slightly less protected version of the terreno's, but I now don't trust them. Got a puncture yesterday on just a normal back lane - full of crap and stones of course, even when dry, but I need a tyre that copes with that as standard. These were tubeless; one needed a plug, others just too small for a plug but took ages to seal and p!ssed out sealant for ages. I do live in a flinty area.

Looking for any recommendations based on experience. No budget, but not silly money. I like the look of G-One allround Evo super grounds, because they sound tough, and I loved the speed and performance of the non-tubeless ones I had ages ago. I'm looking at something with as little tread as that, preferably no more. Priority is toughness and speed, must be tubeless, and don't really care about the weight (although schwalbe marathons aren't really my bag for this task).

Pirelli Cinturato Ms are my go to gravel tyre. I've been running them for 3 years without issue and barely look worn. Good for everything but the thickest of mud as well. And roll pretty well on the road as well.

I'm a Vittoria fan, but do go for the toughened (trail/endurance) ones and find they take a fair level of abuse, but …

Pirelli Cinturato Ms are my go to gravel tyre.

… I have mate's that ride them and they seem good too. You pays your money!

Thanks, I think the cintuarato M just has a bit too much tread for my needs (I have a tough winter gravel tyre - Hutchinson Tundra - if needed) - maybe the H would be worth a look if the carcass is as tough...?

I've used several pirelli tyres and never had an issue tbh.

I've had a lot of similar punctures (panaracer gravel kings) and came to the conclusion that a teeny tiny hole induced by a splinter of flint is too small for sealant to work in (stans). Some web research has led me to Peaty's sealant which I'm assured will deal with such wee holes. Plus £20 a litre is quite good value. I will report back in due course.

Have a look on Lyon equipments site - they are off loading terravail tyres for reasonable money - they are heavy but chunky and so far only a nail induced puncture has needed a plug.

Thanks Phil - To be honest the holes seem to more slashes, but good point about the sealant itself - I use Orange endurance, which i've been generally happy with, but obviously it doesn't work well with these kinds of cuts.

I'll look at the teravail as they're not normally reasonable money!

Would a Maxxis Refuse be too road oriented?
They’re a tough tyre, to the extent that you can feel it in the ride quality.. I have some G-Ones, which I’ve had the sort of small cuts you described, but these are much tougher..
Or even a Maxxis Rambler..

Have used terreno dry, cinturato M and Pathfinder pros, the latter are bang on for your needs, warp speed on the road, better off road in the summer months than they have any right to be, 38mm though

schwalbe G one allrounds here, on my 2 bikes and the wife's too.
fast, no drag, good on gravel.not too bad on wetstuff if careful.
pretty robust too, even with 20 stone onboard...... no issues with punctures and tubes.

I've been using the Cintuarato Hs...less tread than the Ms. Have been good for my back road and light trails. Also. Little slippy where it's been muddy but not unexpected.

Thanks for all the input, lots of useful options I looked into. In the end I went for the Cinturato H, as it looked the best combo of speed and toughness. Not cheap, but will hopefully last. Thanks

Cinturato M would be my recommendation as are the gravel tyres I've put more miles on. If those don't work for you (and if you happened to not like the H version) I'd look at the Schwalbe latest range.

I've used the G-One overlands(50mm) and the Allrounds (40mm) a lot and they've been great. They only struggle with mud, which is where you'd want the Cinturato M (or the new schwalbe RX).
The Overlands still look brand new after 2 winters.

Thanks Valerio. I went for the H as my gravel bike is very road focussed these days (due to my Titus 29er doing most of my off-roading). I've always liked the look of the Overlands as an all-rounder, good to know they're are long lasting too. One to remember if I end up riding this more like a gravel bike again

I'm sure they'll be great. I didnt have any issues with my Cinturato, although they didn't last as long as I hoped.

I was running my Overlands on my Cutthroat before getting a second (gravel) bike which is what I now use when rides feature a lot of tarmac.
As soon as my Allrounds wear out I'll put them on the gravel bike.
