Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
Not an app, but you could load statshunters webpage which does show you if you are in your square or not.
Beware, I am 53x53 on VV and 40x40 on the stats…

Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
I've heard lots of talk about veloviewer tiles, and have until now ignored it as a strange chase of arbitrary grids....but....i'm now curious about it as I cycle so much from the door and have explored lots of corners (and cheeky trails) over the years. Am I right in thinking that all I need to do is get a £10 membership and check it out? Also, the language of VV bagging - is the square size people refer to a strict square shape of complete tiles? Is there another metric which involves just total number..? Is it another way of visualising a personal heatmap like strava does?

Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
I'm slightly ahead of you Faustus.... being an ignoramus of Veloviewer (and most things tbh) I paid the £10 .... it's pretty good tbh .... shows you on a map every ride you've ever logged ( and several I hadn't, I've subsequently pruned them out) ... Once on the Your Summary page on the tab 'Summary' , on the right hand side of the tab, there's an Exploration box.faustus wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 10:30 am I've heard lots of talk about veloviewer tiles, and have until now ignored it as a strange chase of arbitrary grids....but....i'm now curious about it as I cycle so much from the door and have explored lots of corners (and cheeky trails) over the years. In the Exploration Box there's a 'View Map' link next to the Global Heat Map button .... not sure why they went for 9x9 or what Explorer score: 3316 tiles, average of 3.660 mi per tile means I think you then have to upload all rides not just the last 20.
It's worth a tenner just to see where you've ridden !
Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
Thanks for that. I paid a tenner, and remembered that I used to have a profile for a few months way back, so had an account already. I now have a tonne of data that doesn't mean a whole lot to me, but it's of some interest! I had 1500+ rides to import, and it has some interesting info on your gear/bikes - although most of it is in strava. Haven't got a VV score as I don't care about segments generally, and don't pay for strava (I very occasionally go for a KOM where it seems doable).
On the exploration bit, i've got 2430 tiles, average of 12.070 km per tile, Max square 12x12. No idea what that means, but from some of the chatter above probably very modest numbers. Will explore the map if I can figure it out...feels like it might be a cheaper way of getting some kind of personal heat map..?

If you go to the "Activities" tab there's the option to view your tiles on a map. At the top right are four icons: the second puts an outline around your maximum square; the third shows your max cluster.
Like any system with lots of data being presented, it takes a while to figure out what everything is and what it means.

What are the different colours representing? White - you've not been in the square, pink you've been in it , blue- ?whitestone wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 7:20 pm If you go to the "Activities" tab there's the option to view your tiles on a map. no colour overlay = not visited
pink overlay = visited
blue overlay = visited AND surrounded by other squares you have visited.
dark blue overlay = visited AND surrounded by other squares you have visited AND part of your "max cluster"
"Surrounded" means that the square along each of the sides has been visited so those just touching at the corners don't count. Your "max square" (or squares) will have a dark border around it.
Click on the little gear icon at top right of the map and you can change the colours to your own preference.

Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
Well a bit more browsing and it makes a fair bit of sense. Max cluster is 440 and the map seems to have a big patch for my home territory, which is good. I'm less bothered about the max square I have to say, especially as one or two would involve riding on the A34 itself! Increasing total tiles and cluster size is maybe more appealing. Helps to visualise places to visit that I haven't so far (although it doesn't take into account all the riding I did in the many years before strava!). Also did a free trail for strava so I could see my VV score, and it's 98.87. It's a bit harder to understand, but it seems to be my relative segment placing on my top 100 performing segments..? No idea if that's good, but the number of decimal places suggest it flatters me, and it sounds like it's hard to change the score unless you really try for a prolonged period...

Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
I'm not particularly interested in max square size or scores, I like the visual aid for trying to visit new places and following where I have been previously. I only use the Map tab on the activity screen.
You could log some walking activities in Strava and import those, for where cycling may not be ideal.

Re: Veloviewer map - explorer tiles
Added a few more squares yesterday in the sun - still stuck on 9x9 because I've got 4 squares to grab to go up to 12x12 but they're in 3 different directions. I think I'll have to plan 3 rides that go further afield via the missing squares to grab those.
