Panniers - big, cheap but not terrible

Post by RobLyon »

I'd like to do some leisurely tandem touring with my son. Something with quite a bit volume for just throwing stuff in. Ive read some reviews of the rock bros one where the welded seams have failed leaving you a bit stranded. The ortlieb 70l are nice but i dont think i'll get the use to justify £180.

So far ive found the below. Any thoughts/experiences/recommendations?

Thanks

Rob

Alpkit do some pannier bags - https://alpkit.com/collections/panniers ... le-drybags

Looking at Ortlieb's site it seems that the pannier bags are sold as pairs (well at least some of them) - we've got a couple of sets of these or similar https://www.ortlieb.com/uk_en/back-roller-plus-cr+F5207 so the price isn't quite as shocking as it first seems.

They also do a pair that roll up when not in use for reasonable money..?

Hi Rob. Are you going new or used route. If used, then you should be able to find some really good deals. Do they have to be 100% waterproof or will you just used liners.

My last panniers were some used Deuter who I think might have links to Lowe Alpine (though it's probably me just making it up due to buying bits from them brands at a similar time).

Should be some really good used ebay deals at this of year. Links incoming!

Carradice have a factory shop, who'd have thought

There there is these brandnew Super C, made by Andrea
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/156649556610 ... media=COPY

Last but not least, if you ask this person nicely and explain that you're trying to save yourself from the world of new-cheap-subStandard, then he might accept an offer of £65 for the pair. Mention your little one :-bd

BTW, the Altura Vortex looks really good (and cheap). It'll be lighter than the LOMO I imagine but I agree that they are tough (LOMO).

My first set of bikepacking bags were the original Altura Vortex bags- they were good value for money and well constructed. I would recommend if you need something cheap and cheerful.

Thanks for the replies.

I was highest bidder on those carradice ones but he wants more than new price for them. I think i like those so might buy new with cyclescheme to save 30% and get a matching bar bag to. Work is a bit tricky at the minute though so will need to wait a few months.
