Recommend me a REAR wheel

Or sell me one, if you have a rear 29", boost, HG, 30mm int wheel!
Ideally 6bolt and with 32 spokes.

My cheap WTB i30 has started showing cracks around the spokes. The wheel is over a year old and for the money (£100) I think it's done ok: Memory Bike Adventure, Calder Divide Trail, BearBones200, endless Tor Divide recces.
I'm also just shy of 90kg and fairly clumsy.
It's currently paired with a DT Swiss M1900 front wheel.

I have narrowed it down to:
- DT Swiss M1900 (approx £200) which would go nicely with the front wheel.
- Hope Fortus 30 (approx £250). I have another wheelset with the Pro5 on and so far ive been happy
- Hunt Trail Wide (approx £300 or £350 for a new wheelset!)

Any recommendation?

Ideally id like to spend as little as possible, while getting something reliable.
I don't care about the weight.
I looked into the used market but with current sales buying new is just as expensive/cheap.

Why not just replace the rim? I think the M502 is the rim they use for M1900 wheels: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-tape/2 ... rim-black/

That's actually the combination I believe I have (M502 at the rear, M1900 at the front) but I'd need to go to the bike shed to check, and it's cold …

That's actually the combination I believe I have (M502 at the rear, M1900 at the front) but I'd need to go to the bike shed to check, and it's cold …

Ive been using it with a M1900 front wheel i got for cheap from Wiggle (ill spare you the story of how I ended up with this combo!)

I did consider replacing the rim but:
- ive been told it's about £100 (it's not something im capable of doing myself) for the job
- the original wheel costed me about £120 and its on sale for £150. For £50 i think itd probably just buy the new wheel.
- there seem to be a lot of offers around for black friday and i was wondering if i could get a bargain....but which one?!

Fair enough. From your list then, the M1900 is kinda an OEM entry level wheel. Does the job and is solid though; I hear mixed things about Hope rims. But you'll get a nice hub; And Hunt have a very mixed reputation, but good after sales service to call on when seemingly quite often needed. My trail wides were sloppily built, as was a warranty replacement a mate's just been sent which needed tweaking from the off. At sale prices they offer fair value for money.

They don't seem to do the marketing of Hunt nor have the near cult-like following of Hope, but I don't think many people regret buying DT Swiss.

If you go the rim only option then you've to factor in the cost of rebuilding - unless you do it yourself of course - but is likely to need a new set of spokes regardless.

Folk on STW state/complain(*) that Hope rims are "soft" but I've got them on both the Solaris and Spearfish and they are fine. I have pulled a spoke through the rim on one wheel but the wheel was at least four years old when it happened and I could have had a big hit so...

I'd just go with whatever decent make you can get hold of at whatever price point you are willing to pay. Unless you are absolutely hammering full on DH courses all the time you aren't going to notice any difference.

I have reused spokes loads of times* and always try to buy a rim with the same erd

* given how long rims last i mean i reuse when a rim goes doubt i have used some x3 but who knows. At least 4 wheels i own were re used spokes ( i am 63 kg though.which might matter )

Ditto have reused spokes loads of times. In fact, being able to rebuild weird stuff with random old spokes was why I taught myself to build wheels in the first place.

I have a never-ridden WTB i30 32h 29er rim hanging in my garage...how about teaching yourself to build wheels by starting easy and doing a straight swap like for like for your old rim?

Buy new rim, tape to old rim, transfer spokes one at a time after loosening them all - simple!

Building your own really isn't that difficult. I've done all of mine and I haven't died yet. Built from scratch or re-used old spokes, taped new rims next to old and transferred the spokes just get a rim with the same ERD. You don't need a jig or any fancy tools just use the frame, a spoke key and a couple of cable ties. I would definitely give if a try. It's very satisfying when you ride them for the first time. Beware though it's strangely addictive.......I've got 2 more rims arriving next week

Uuuh the Halo seems interesting!!!
Am I likely to notice any difference from say, they're DT swiss option (about £50 more expensive)?

I did it at home with no fancy tools and a followed a classic book on how to do it (somebody here will know what it's called). When I was happy it was all straight and ok, I dropped the pair off at my lbs and they double checked it and adjusted the odd spoke for a £10 and said I had done a pretty decent job. It was strangely satisfying to do as it is the only part of a bike I had never built from scratch,

It would definitely help if I could learn how to build a wheel, but I assumed I would need tools....rather than just flipping my bike over its head.
The other issue is time! I can't even find time to clean my bike, let alone learning the art of wheel building!!!

I'm still waiting to hear back from WTB and find out if it's something they'd cover under warranty

WTB came through and theyre sending a new rim!
Now, that rules out buying an entire new wheel (although I could potentially do that and try to sell the new WTB rim).

That possibly opens up the possibility of upgrading the existing rear hub, not that the Futura(?) hub that came with the wheel has given me much trouble, although it'll probably cost me as much as buying a brand new wheel! (with a lower spec hub though)
