Set off for a ride with Cath. About 3km in I stand up to power up a short steep rise and the bike feels weird. The pedalling has become really "surgey" as if I'm jumping up and down three gears through every pedal stroke. I look down and ...
I'd snapped the chainring
I don't know about you but I tend not to carry a spare chainring so it was the walk of shame back to the van. Cath has carried on leaving me to do the shopping (just to rub salt in the wounds)

Better weight than wisdom, a traveller cannot carry
Given it was parts bin special, and I replaced the crank set with another parts bin set, expense wasn't really a big deal. I was glad of the chainring being steel, it meant bending it back into shape wasn't too worrying.

Bob, do you think the missing chainring bolt may have contributed to your excessive power?
Not quite Steve. Quite hard to see in the photo but the bolt is still there, attached to the piece in front of the water bottle. I've just taken everything off the bike and it looks like that bolt pulled through the spider arm! I'm not sure if that was a result of the chainring snapping or it caused the chainring to snap.
