Tailfin TT bag 1.5L mtb version - flappy or zippy? (Thread closed)

Post by redefined_cycles »

Here is a review if no one knows of how good they are. I'm certainly convinced and will be selling off some of TT bags once this is bought. I'm getting the 1.5L version and the zipper one is 20g lighter.

Thanks all if you wished to vote https://edinburghbikeshop.com/tailfin-t ... es-review/

1 (2 including me) for the zip. £5 cheaper and lighter. No brained... ordered.

Have the flap one...too wide on the gravel bike but good on an MTB with longer TT. Flap is super easy to use and won't fail like a zip, it even self closes. Spare elastic closure available if you manage to break it. Beats the zip for ease and foolproof-ness

Thanks Faustus. Hopefully it's a decent YKK zipper and the 5 year warranty might cover me somewhat. Last full price bag I bought was in 2020, so I guess I keep my new bags for about 4 years : - )

Coming from a TT bag with a burly zip (which i loved) i went with the flip for waterproofness and it hasnt let me down.

It's very practical, easy to use, I have only caught it with my knee a couple of times in 1000s of km.
Not a fluffy gravel rider.

Having burst the zip on every tt bag I've owned - guessing about 6 - I'd be tempted to try a flap next time

Hmmm. Interesting to know. I just assumed that the zipper would be more waterproof as they've worked for me in the past (Apidura and a r a p h a which is probably made by Apidura). Maybe I might call them tomorrow and see if I can pay the extra fiver for the the flap version

Always did want the flapper on this but then I was sure I read some reviews saying the zipper version was stronger. Hence the silly voting thing and getting everyone involved (once again, sorry) in my pack purchase.

It arrived. They were happy to swap out the the flap version without me paying the extra fiver. Looks rather cool and sturdy. Hopefully it keeps the water out as well as a zipper.

On the zipper and 5 year warranty, this is what Sam at TF said:

Thanks for getting in touch, Of course this is no problem and i have now made this change for you ! Both versions of the Toptube bags are covered by our 5 year warranty and zip defects are included in this warranty.

I hope this helps and please let me know how you get on once the bag arrives !

All the best,

Sam
Upon reading it again. Zip defect (IMHO) isn't the same as over stretching a zip. So Inwould have thought if we broke the zipper after 4 years of abuse the warranty wouldn't cover it. Hopefully the flap/bungee lasts alot longer than do our zips!
