Pushbike Commutes of 2024

I know there's a thread of a similar name on here, but today was a deal breaker so I thought it fair to start a new thread for this year's commutes.

Hoping it might inspire others (who don't already) to pushbike it to work. For those that do commute, sharing here is nice as it encourages others.

Reason for today's being a bit special is that it's the first mtb commute I've done in years where I actually made it (only ever really tried across/near Hellvelyn really and it was idiotic of me). Nothing like a bit of a rock garden or few when trying to smash it to work. There's that fine line of not smashing so hard you end up smashed.

Nor taking it so easy that you end up late. Work was arranged for between 1100 and 1200. I'd called ahead in advance and it was good old Sheffield. Told the chap I'm coming by bike so I need some wiggle room, so he gave me that 1 hour window.

Route made, I never realised how much nettles were involved. Rest assured there was some enforced walking and I'll not be taking them nettle paths again. Rock Gardens, there were more than you could shake yer stick it.


There was even one with crushed red brick. But then one stone looked bigger than a brick, so I took a piece hoping Reg might come check the thread and .ame some high level quarry comments.


Start of the ride, I wasn't sure if I'd overinflated the tyre. Though the finger press test told me it was spot on. I tried to take a piccie or few, mid ride. But the pic of my boots looks slightly nicer, so there!

One issue I was worried for was water. It was hot and I only had capacity to carry a 620ml Camelbak. But it all worked out nicely and I just about managed to keep well hydrated. I definitely (think) I have Strata Florida muck inside my rear hub (not me, just the hub... maybe).

Oh, and a picture of Emley Moor Mast from a different angle. Not sure I've ever been here before.


Twas nice and my first proper commute via mtb on the rocks. Until next time, hopefully won't be long.


Last but not least, the evidence (sort of... looks nice). 11.89kg of CO2 saved apparently.

That's just the sort of thing Phil. Yes, that walk/hike was probably my first mtb-attmept.

That snow commute is fantastic Phil. Commutes are ace. Maybe we encourage more people into em!

When you have a bike like that Shaff, it would be rude not to use it at every available opportunity

I had a similar commute into Milton Keynes around that time (via Woburn golf course and lots of local, snowy MTB trails in between . It took me 2.5 hours to do a 1-hour ride and I was the only one who bothered to make it into the office .
The commute home was similarly entertaining, too .
