1x12 road/gravel eGears

Post by Dave Barter »

I recently bought a road bike with 105 Di2 and am utterly sold on the electronic shifting. I developed a carpel tunnel issue recently and this has helped no end. My Specialized Cruz is due some love after 5 years of abuse so I’m thinking of going electric on this as well. I don’t think 105 comes in a 1x12 config. I’d only need a single eShifter. Anyone got any experience of doing this? The bike is currently Sram Force one

Is R7170 not 12 speed Dave?

Otherwise could be GRX

I thought the prob with di2 was that you couldn’t mix groupsets & the cost of the road levers, unless that’s changed?

It’s not 1x12

Would it need a front derailleur fitted to work?

I’m interested myself as have a road orientated di2 that I’d like to set-up better for off-road use..

I’m not sure? Will do some Googling. But I’d end up buying an effectively useless 2nd lever

When i looked at it i came to the conclusion that i'd be limited by what size cassette my current derailleur set-up would go up to, & cause i was told that with di2 you can't mix groupsets, i'd have to swap it all out for GRX..

Agree that di2 is lovely, but the components aren't cheap, especially the hydraulic drop-bar levers

No idea about 12 speed, but I have two bikes running ultegra 1x11 Di2 that work fine without a front derailleur.

Before hydraulic brakes the Di2 shifters used to be cheap as chips as they were just micro switches. However, I would get the LH shifter anyway as you can program any switch to do any shift, so maybe replicate the RH shifter with the LH one to give your carpel tunnel a break.
