Hub/cassete compatability query

Post by BridlewayBimbler »

Evening all. I'm.pretty sure the answer is 'yes' but I just wanted to check whether an 11/12 speed Shimano HG freehub would work with a 9 speed cassete?

Thanks

Shimano 12 speed isn't HG, it uses the Microspline pattern.

8/9/10/11 Shimano MTB all uses the same freehub, road is a bit different*.

*Awkward

HG is the 8-11 speed, the 12 speed is called microspline.

Hg will take 12 speed just not a shimano 12 speed casette # more effing standards no one asked for

I have 12 speed on an hope pro 2 for example and that is from 9 speed days

Road.casetted and frehubs are a bit wider (1.> mm iirc) so you need a spacer for a mtb casette on road wheels and a road wont go on * to mtb freewheels

* technically you can remove material from the rrear of a road casette with a lathe or some such

SRAM XD is nothing for Shimano cassette users.
It's for SRAM's Eagle and Transmission cassettes. Clear?

Then there’s the prototype SRAM and Shimano 13 speeds that have been seen from afar on pro bikes. I wonder if they have to use different free hubs. I think EKAR uses the normal Campy freehub

Kinda: Ekar uses N3W, which is backwards compatible, but you can't fit Ekar cassettes on an older Campag freehub.

If you need a road cassette skimming down to fit, I've done a few and am happy to modify them if needed. Only works easily on cassettes with an aluminium carrier though, not the cheap all steel ones.
