Traditionally it's the weekend before the weekend before Crimbo. In this case Dec 9/10th.

Unfortunately Mrs Perrin has commanded me to feature on some sort of family 'do' on that weekend, from which I'm having considerable difficulty extricating myself.

In fact there are also mutterings about the Winter Event weekend as well, and plainly that's flat out Non Negotiable. This year I suspect I may have to offer up the Winter Bivvy as a deflecting sacrifice as it were, and partake of a standard BaM instead during the week. Extremely annoying, compounded by the fact that I had to bail on last year's SWWB at the very last second.

Sigh.

Upon reflection, I suspect there may be some 'new kids on the block' who have no idea what I'm talking about (*). Winter Event? Winter Bivvy? What is Reg on about now? Same thingy surely?

TBH I haven't time to explain, can someone else help out please. All I know is I've had some of the best experiences of my life on past Winter Bivvies - the various Long Mynd ones springing to mind, especially the notorious 'ice skating' one.....

Winter Event: a similar format to the Welsh Ride Thing but in "winter" which is why it's called "The Winter Event" and not "The slighly wet and cold event" which applies to the rest of the year in Wales, where Stu sends you a list of Grid References to visit. You may visit as many of these as you wish unless your name is John Climber in which case you just ignore them and do your own thing.

Winter Bivy: A bivy on the first weekend of the meteorological winter (posh way of saying the first weekend in December). Not necessarily located in Wales, groups of Boners who live relatively closely to one another choose to bivy together leading to "The Yorkshire Winter Bivy" etc.

SWWB: She Who Won't Budge.

I thoroughly enjoyed last year's really rather frosty SWWB - but this year have similar sort of predicament as Reg.... both my husband and my daughter have birthdays that weekend, and whilst I got away with it last year, to be away for a second year running would I think not be in the spirit of things, even by my poor standards....

So standard BAM for me in December, quite possibly a mid week one too - but see you at the WE

1st weekend in December is Global Fat Bike day ride.

Anyone with a Fat bike is encouraged to take it for a spin.

Several from here are heading to Snowdonia to for a ride, night out with good food and beer before a ride back on the Sunday.
So we'll be doing our Winter Bivvy stopping in a private bothy high in the hills.

Yes Dave. Possibility of the place in Falkland I used on my October BAM but might require a formal booking so mebbes not a true bivvy - I'm looking into it. Otherwise looking at a few other options. I did think of another assault on Glas alt Sheil bothy but its turned very cold up here with plenty of snow on high so currently not feeling very motivated to such an undertaking....

Sounds good Phil! The purist in me won't be offended by a pre-arranged accommodation. Glas allt Shiel would be great but it's a bit risky planning a visit on a particular date, as last year proved (though that was fairly exceptional!).

I did think that - more likely to be lashing rain. But....
We could always do a borders bothy as I'm not sure any highlanders will be coming this year. Or Devilla forest if we fancy actually bivvying
