because the user is a complete caveman where tech is concerned.

Ton. Would you like to borrow my Wahoo Bolt V1. It's my spare unit but fits your bill perfectly. If you like it then you might want to invest in the V2. Almost same caveman friendly, but with a colour screen and 'point and shoot' option.

I’ve got a Garmin Etrex 30. Comes with one on the TalkyToaster topographic shore UK SD cards. Loads soft extras and a nice MYOG handlebar mount.
One of the easiest to use Garmins and in VGC.
